In 2013, 4.5 acres of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon was added to the wineries existing 4 acres of Chardonnay and Petit Verdot. In 2014 the Traminette was replaced with Vidal Blanc. The vineyard was expanded once again in 2019 with Petit Verdot on one of our best plots of land.

In the past 5 years, I have worked tirelessly to finesse the winemaking program here at Thatch Winery with our General Manager, Jason Hayman. It's our sincere belief that great wine is made in the vineyard, and thus much of our time has been spent honing our farming practices on our estate property.

We had our beautiful wedding here back in November, and it was nothing less than perfect. The wine is excellent and so are the views. The picture-perfect setting makes for a magical ceremony. Barrie and her team at Thatch made everything easy, stress-free and streamlined. Barrie provides some lovely wedding décor and inventory for the day-of, along with a list of professional preferred vendors. The team members at Thatch are also responsive to emails with all of all your questions answered, and always happy to coordinate a visit regarding your big day. Thatch will always hold a special place in

We showed up an hour before close with 6 adults and 4 teenagers. Initially we were outside and the staff brought chairs, cushions to make us comfortable until it started raining. They moved us to a private room inside with smiles. The wine is good, the setting pretty and the staff wonderful. Highly recommend.

I loved the environment at Thatch! There’s a beautiful back deck area surrounded with trees and the wait staff was amazing! Suzanne took her time multiple times to take pictures of our group and was a most professional impromptu photographer.
We had a problem with our checks but Suzanne sat down with us toward the end and helped us figure it all out.
Professional, friendly, understanding and caring. Loved them!

Very kind staff and beautiful atmosphere. I love the Bavarian style building and the cozy interior. We had wine flights (if I could go back in time I'd get the rouge) but the fundamental one was lovely too!
I would 100% go back! Great experience and not pretentious like some other neighboring wineries.

This was probably everyone's favorite winery of our visit (out of 10). It is definitely off the beaten path-- the road to get there is pretty crazy-- but it is TOTALLY worth it! We all loved the Lemberger but all of the wines were good here. The winery itself is very cute with plenty of seating and a great atmosphere. The staff was wonderful and I would certainly consider this a must visit during your stop in Charlottesville

Very nice winery in Charlottesville Virginia. The maps directions were not exactly correct but we finally got there. They had plenty of outdoor seating during this COVID time. My friend and I shared the four glass 3 oz each tasting for $15 and I also had an Honest Tea for $3. You order outside the building then they bring you the sampling's. The setting is a nice woodsy forest.

Came here on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon in January and this place was still packed! Despite how busy it was, our party of 6 was able to go up to the bar and start a tasting right away. $15 to taste 10 wines is one of the best tasting deals I've experienced at a Charlottesville vineyard thus far. Especially loved the Viogner and Cabernet Sauvignon. We then bought a bottle of cab sauv and enjoyed it upstairs, where there was plenty of seating and live music. Thatch lets you bring in outside food so we brought our own charcuterie to enjoy in this wonderful atmosphere. We will definitely

A lovely, quiet, and beautiful winery that has a great view of the forest from their main level patio or from their upper level seating area (inside). The upstairs of this location has plenty of seating arrangements for large or small crowds, a beautiful stone fireplace, LOTS of board games and card games for use, and a large Scrabble board affixed to one of their walls for enjoyment also! The downstairs is where they perform the tastings and they have small seating option down here as well. Their deck though, recently renovated, is absolutely fantastic - with two levels and a great view of the

One of my favorite wineries in Virginia wine country.
Often underspoken, I find it's never really mentioned when folks are listing the wineries they love the most. Maybe that's because it is slightly further south on 20 (though it's really not any further from town than most of the other wineries), or maybe it's just quaint and calm enough to avoid the bachelorette and UVA plagues that inevitably draw attention.
First Colony's tasting room has two tasting bars, and on my first visit (a Saturday afternoon in March) it was fairly bustling, but not with more than a few others

Impressive wines and knowledgeable staff. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Definitely a need to visit winery and right down the road about a mile away is Micheal Schapps. The atmosphere is nice and they have plenty of space inside and out to accommodate larger groups. First colony has live music and a thatched roof :) Love that Cab Sauv and Port-style!! Thanks!!
