Services
Founded in 2004 by Mary Nealon, Bear Creek Environmental (BCE) is a multidisciplinary firm providing consulting services in stream geomorphic assessment, biological investigation, water quality evaluation, stream habitat restoration, permitting, erosion prevention and sediment control, and geographic information systems (GIS).
Biomonitoring is an important tool used to evaluate the overall health of surface waters. BCE conducts biomonitoring of benthic macroinvertebrates, organisms that dwell on or near the bottom of stream. These organisms can be used as surrogates to determine if stream and rivers are meeting water quality standards.
Bear Creek Environmental, in partnership with another consulting firm, has conducted fish population monitoring in the vicinity of a large scale wind farm in northeastern Vermont. The purpose of the project is to monitor surface waters during the construction and early operation of the wind farm per requirements of the Section 401 Water Quality Certification issued by the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources.
In 2013, Bear Creek Environmental was retained by Green Mountain Power to restore a stream channel that underwent major incision during a flood event. BCE conducted detailed survey work at the site and collaborated with an engineering firm to complete a stream channel restoration design.

This design incorporated the use of eighteen boulder weirs (steps) and large woody debris to stabilize the incising channel and provide diverse bed features over a 200 foot segment of the stream.BCE scientists oversaw the construction of the restoration design during the summer of 2014. Vermont Agency of Transportation/Geomorphic Technical Advice: Vermont Route 106 Permitting and Design.
Bear Creek Environmental has been conducting water quality monitoring at Stowe Mountain Resort for nearly a decade. The purpose of the monitoring program is to provide information and guidance for water quality protection during and following the construction of the development at Spruce Peak. Each year, water quality samples are collected under baseflow conditions and during rain/snowmelt events.
