We stayed at Captain’s Lookout. It was a great stay! The house was very clean. We feel like it was even bigger than the pictures show - that kitchen is HUGE! The pool and hot tub were well-maintained. Well-supplied kitchen. Plenty of parking. Just a few things could use improvement: a few of the beds could use new mattresses, blackout curtains would be nice in the bedrooms that face the ocean, and the pool table pockets have staples popping out that can injure people, and a newer/larger washer and dryer would go a long way! We have been using Southern Shores for the past 10 years now and have always had excellent service, until recently. The house we stayed in the week of September 5th was disgustingly dirty. When we walked in the main door, the carpet had giant stains all over it, like a pet had had several accidents on it and it had never been cleaned up. The carpets themselves were just incredibly filthy. Someone had spilled a giant box of Nerd candies all down the carpeted steps leading downstairs, and they were everywhere, telling me it had neither been vacuumed, swept, or mopped. Very disappointed in my experience with Southern Shores Realty. Our recent rental in August was a disaster and their poor customer service made the experience even worse. The rental property was not as fully advertised, was not at all clean upon arrival and the customer service staff was highly unresponsive. Additionally, there were issues with the property that were unsafe, including an external staircase wrapped in yellow caution tape, light fixtures not function properly and a refrigerator that leaked all over the kitchen floor.

The house was very dirty. Mold on the shower curtains, clothes in the dressers, dust, grease everywhere. The 'housekeepers' called to tell us the home was ready; for what? They sprayed deodorizer in the rooms. The pile of fake nails on the floor smelled awesome. There was zero maintenance in the house. Never using Southern Shores Realtor again.

Called The office so far for three consecutive days for someone to come and fix the air conditioning. Cancelled non refundable plans last night with the kids because we were sitting and waiting for a repair man that never showed up. Every time we call the office they say someone will come out and nothing yet. We are already three days into our vacation and everyone is miserable. No one at the office seems to care the money and time we spent to stay at a beachside house for a family vacation. Every time we call there is another excuse of why they haven't had a chance to address our complaint

Our stay at southern shores realty has made us never want to stay in one of their homes again. When we first arrived at The Precious Rapture, it was so disgusting I didn’t even want to put my baby down on the furniture. The mattress covers had stains and other people’s hair on them, along with crumbs. A couple of them were half way falling off the bed as well. We had 0 sheets/pillow cases/ towels upon arrival and had to wait until 10:30 at night for someone to show up with them after we called to complain. Although I have used Southern Shores Realty for several years, the house we rented this year Garbee Gabes was a major disappointment. some of the issues that we came across in this house the pool ladder was broken, there is a large hole in the screened porch, the porch furniture had mold on the cushions to the point, we could not use them. Although the house has large decking there is no furniture on the decks to sit. Starting with goods: pool and hot tub were maintained well. Ample beach gear which was wonderful, as well as board games and TV's. Owner likes their house.
The bad. I feel bad for the owner if they're unaware of how "managed" their property is. The house needed TLC badly. From nails popping up to outside doors missing locks, to dead light bulbs.
Cleaning is a joke. These people are terrible at cleaning. Mold everywhere. My wife was bit by bugs while sleeping. And my favorite was the cockroach

We stayed at the 4ever young 0774 July 24th-31st. First we couldn't check in until 5pm due to extra cleaning for COVID. When we arrived the house had several empty water bottles through the property and the floors in the bathroom were not cleaned. There was sand in the pool and two missing spindles on the upper deck that a kid could easily fall through. The property was advertised as a ocean view and all you could see is trees. Worse realtor ever!!! House filthy and infested with spider's! Broken furniture leaving me short for sleeping accommodations! Trash cans out front from previous rentor all week . When you call the office to complain we were told several times by whoever answers the phone "NOT MY JOB" . Their was actually waste in the downstairs toilet (so much for covid cleaning) . My children and grandchildren are spread threw out the states so the time we spend together is rare and was less then enjoyable as the spiders are dropping off the ceiling into your dinner plates! We were not allowed in the rental until 5pm for "COVID cleaning " and it was a dirty mess. We found food wrappers in 2 bedrooms, a condom under a bed (my 10 year old found that), food on the counter, and period blood on a mattress protector. I get it's a rental but could you make an effort to clean? I was told someone would come out and all he did was change the mattress cover. I spent $5000 on a rental to clean it the whole first day! And the pool gave our kids rashes and the pool guy came 3x's to try to fix it and gave up on Friday.

My family has been coming to the Outer Banks, specifically Southern Shores, for over 40 years. The area is fantastic but Southern Shores Realty has slowly deteriorated in their expectations for cleanliness and home maintenance. Let me add - 1 is very nice of us! We rented a house from Southern Shores Reality last week. We came home from the beach only to find that the air conditioning was not working and the house was in the 90s. Our dogs were in distress and it was not just uncomfortable but unhealthy. Where do we start... we have been renting Outer Banks properties from various companies for over a decade so we have a little bit of comparison to go on. The home we rented, Block & Tackle, was in horrible condition, with the pictures obviously being older ones that weren't reflective of the current condition. Rented a property, on arrival we found a green deck, green pool with algae, algae on the pool walls and a molding concrete. The deck had rotten boards that fell when walking on them. The review pictures were old and not accurate. The owner was onsite and was aware of the pool that has not been cleaned since last year. Our unit, the Triple Lindy was a perfect space for our family of 8. We loved the porches, the pool and the hot tub. Everything was clean when we got there except the grill. But that was an easy fix. We grilled almost everyday outside.
And the best part being so close to the beach, being able to just go see the sunset per chance if we wanted to without having to plan, that was heavenly. My daughters and husband also saw sea turtles at the beach on another morning.
Would stay again.

We have been going to the Outer Banks and using Southern Shores for over 40 years. We have on a few occasions used other rental agencies and have always come back to Southern Shores. They have the best selection, great support services and prompt and thorough response to emergencies. However, by far and away the strength of Southern Shores for us has been its people. Houses, value and locations are important. The people are critical. This is where you want to plan your vacation.

Pet Free homes are not without pets! We have stayed in the OBX for the last 15 years and always stay in pet free homes. This year was our first year renting from Southern Shores and we will never rent from them again! We stayed in Labrador South and the home was covered in long black and short white dog hair. We called and Southern Shores sent a cleaning lady, but it was impossible for her to get the dog hair off the furniture. We ended up having to cover all the furniture with sheets. We rented a property for 2 weeks in August 2016. Having owned multiple property's in the Outer Banks over the years, we understand in August the property has had a lot of wear and tear. Things may not be perfect and we are able to overlook a lot. The property's pictures couldn't show the mold in the bathrooms or the bugs in the living room. There were so many cobwebs in windows, there was no way a spring clean had been done.

We didn't have the best luck with our rental off of Hillcrest road unit # 902 the house had many things not working in our favor. The top problems was the unit wasn't cleaned up on the outside or inside. The bugs in the house was unbelievable and we kept spraying bug and ant killer the entire week. The top floor air conditioner wasn't working and this was known before we arrived. The Southern Shores staff brought in three small window units that doesn't work well with a upper floor this large. Close to a 5 but I rarely go 5 stars. We have rented with Southern Shores for more than 15 years in a variety of houses from Duck to Kill Devil Hills. Currently we found the perfect house for us and come back every year to the same rental. It's always been clean, if there was a maintenance issue they got on it (last year the thermostat broke, they came later that day). They could have had better response at the help number, although it was after hours but still you need to get to someone that can provide some information.

What a bunch of jerks! My first experience was to email and inquire about renting a house at Thanksgiving. The woman who responded was incredibly rude and assumed I was under the age of 24 because I work at a college and have an edu email address. She flat out told me that I had to be at least 24 to rent...I am in my 30s.
Second time, I called to inquire about their pet policy as I was set to stay my boyfriends family. They were rude said no and then called the main renter and wanted to remind them of their pet policy and basically told them that I planned on bringing my pets without consulting
