Mental Health America of Ohio was founded in 1956 as an affiliate of Mental Health America, the nation's leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness and promoting the overall mental health of all Americans. MHA was established in 1909 by former psychiatric patient Clifford W. Beers.
During his stays in public and private institutions, Beers witnessed and was subjected to horrible abuse. From these experiences, Beers set into motion a reform movement that took shape as Mental Health America.

Services
MHAOhio supports our community by guiding people in need of mental health services to the appropriate providers as well as providing services that may not otherwise be accessible. We work with individuals and their families through each step on their paths to wellness, from making initial referrals, to providing free mental health services, to helping maintain stability and productivity once it is achieved.
The Pro Bono Counseling Program links volunteer mental health professionals with those who need but cannot afford mental health counseling. The program's volunteers are licensed and insured mental health professionals who provide short-term counseling (12 sessions or less) at no cost to the recipient.
MHAOhio's Get Connected Program offers a unique, free service to Central Ohio residents who are living with a mental illness and their families. An empathetic and knowledgeable advocate who works to understand each caller's specific problem and connects them with mental health providers and community resources that will be most helpful for their situation.
Are you a family member or loved one struggling to support someone living in Central Ohio with a mental illness?. The Family Advocate Program connects family members and loved ones of persons living with a mental illness to peer Family Advocates. Our volunteers have knowledge of the local mental health system and also personally understand what it means to support a family member, significant other, or friend.
We are Ohio moms who have survived prenatal/postpartum depression (PPD) or anxiety so we understand like no one else can. We had thoughts that scared and shamed us. We blamed ourselves. We doubted ourselves. We felt weighed down by all the "shoulds" of motherhood. Some of us had a hard time finding help.
