Services
Hanscom's Motel and Cottages was born when Elwood (Hap) and Emily Hanscom began construction in the early 1950s and completed the property in the spring of 1959. Hap was a carpenter by trade, while Emily provided maid and laundry services for the summer residents of Mount Desert Island. Hap and Emily had three children, Robert, Virginia and Helen.
We have 12 cottages and motel units on a spacious piece of property with attractively landscaped grounds, which provide our guest with both beauty and privacy. We have a shaded picnic area with tables and propane gas grills for your enjoyment. You'll enjoy our well-maintained flower gardens along with the giant red oaks and majestic white pines that dominate our property.
Hiking opportunities at Acadia are seemingly endless on more than 150 miles of trails. Immerse yourself in forests, walk along rocky coastlines, or stand on exposed mountain tops sometimes all in one hike. Don't be fooled by the height of the park's mountains; challenging hikes climb from sea level to summits.
Acadia National Park is a frequent stop for visitors to Maine's mid-coast. Its stunning views, fresh air, and wildness attract visitors in droves. If you're coming to visit Acadia National Park, you'll want to check out some of the best hikes the park has to offer. Whether you're looking for breathtaking views or to experience the earthy scent of a pine forest after fresh rain, Acadia National Park is the place for you!
The bustling restaurant scene in Bar Harbor features a wide range of dining experiences and something to satisfy most every taste and budget, from steaks and seafood to a variety of local favorites, international dishes, heart healthy fare, and vegan and vegetarian options too. Enjoy fine dining, casual eating, pubs, cafes, and breweries; whatever suits your culinary desires for dinner, lunch and breakfast, Bar Harbor has it.

We stayed in cabin 1 for five nights. Our stay was great! The bed was very comfortable and the had everything we needed. The kitchen has plates, cups, silverware, pots & pans. If you plan to cook, you'll need to bring groceries as nothing food-wise (ex. salt/pepper/olive oil/etc is not included).
Exactly as pictured!
Love the outdoor area, too. It was nice to have a place to enjoy other than the cabin and also met other guests.

Good little cottages with some strange decisions. We were left alone our entire stay as maid service is only upon request, but check out is hands off. Includes small kitchen, but theres a $20 fee if you don't clean your own dishes. Included pans but no spatula for some reason. Shower was poorly designed and leaks a lot when you open the door. None of these are particularly deal breakers but worth mentioning. They are good value, but could definitely use some rule changes and modifications.

Awesome price for the space we got for the night. It was quiet, well-stocked and clean room. The other motel guests were friendly too which made the stay pleasant. It was close to downtown and Acadia. Would definitely stay here again. Thank you!

Unfortunately, we didn't have the best experience here. The heating/cooling didn't work properly, the room was damp and poorly ventilated, and the comforter and towels smelled funny (probably because they couldn't dry properly in the room after being washed). The owners were not very helpful or responsive when we called them about heating or any of the other issues.
On the plus side, the setting is cute and their outdoor common areas are quiet and peaceful.
Probably would not stay here again in the future.

Lovely place with nice rooms, great little kitchenettes, and well-kept grounds. There are outdoor seating areas with grills. In a quiet neighborhood yet close to the main village area of Bar Harbor. Love to see places that welcome dogs. Very happy we found this place!

Our stay was so amazing, that we booked our next stay while we were still here!!! Rooms are so clean that you feel as if you are sleeping in your own room! I had no fear of sleeping in the bed like I do when I stay other places.. the sheets feel as though they were washed at home. Its close enough to the town for you to enjoy but isn't close enough to where you feel crowded with other travelers. Owned was extremely kind and was fast at responding. If you are looking through places to stay... I suggest this place over all the others!! Trust me you won't regret it!

I unfortunately have to echo a fellow reviewers thoughts... I have no idea how this place has such consistently excellent reviews. The folks up front are friendly enough, the location is nice and I do love that they allow pets, but that's where the virtues end for me.
Our mattress was creaky, lumpy and old. This was enough of a problem that I ended up with a neck issue that put a major damper on our plans for hiking in Acadia. When I pulled back the top quilt on our bed, there were leaves and speckles of dirt on the blanket between it and the sheets. Nice.
The linoleum in the bathroom was

We stayed here on a weekend family get-together and were all very impressed with the accommodations. Considering its proximity to Bar Harbor (2 miles?) and the price, this quaint place is hard to beat! Individual 'cabins' in a motel-style setting set back from the main road just enough to make it a mostly quiet getaway. Perks include 3 propane grills, patio tables and chairs with umbrellas, a fire pit with wood ($3/bundle), a "heated" pool (not a hot tub), and a back grassy area that is flat and large enough for a badminton set, ring toss or frisbee. There are plenty of trees

There are things about this place that we really liked, and some things that we really didn't appreciate. So the best way to write this review is post pros and cons.
Pros
Very clean, neat. Fairly well-maintained. Shady. Quiet, even though it's right on a main route the foliage and a hill keep the road noise to a minimum. They actually were drying some of their linens on an (out of sight) clothesline. You've got to love that! Grills and large tables for outside meals. Plenty of outdoor seating for guests. Impeccably clean pool, Ocean beach access.Pet friendly. Very nice staff. Fairly

We really enjoyed our stay. Conveniently located, clean and affordable. We stayed in a cottage with our dog and would walk her down to the beach. Hot shower too. They have a fire pit supplied with wood and an outdoor grill.

Deceptively nice place. The outside leaves much to be desired, but once you get inside one of the small cabins, you'll find a clean, well cared for room. The bed was comfortable and the room was warm (we pulled in and it was 40 degrees out). The gal working the front desk was nice and friendly. Certainly worth checking out. Oh...and they accept pets.

Have stayed here multiple times while visiting Acadia National Park. Great, clean cottages minutes away from Bar Harbor. In addition to being able to cook inside the cottage, there is also outdoor grills/seating. You are also within walking distance from a beach area called, 'The ovens,' which is a great place for collecting sea glass. Will stay here again!

We had a really nice time here!
Our dog had a great time rolling around in the grass and the staff always made a point to come and say hello and bring him a treat.

The description and pictures when booking on line was nothing like we expected... The unit we had was facing the roadway, the traffic was loud. The unit itself are on the small side. The units are very clean. they do need better utensils and cooking tools. The mini refriorator so not enough space for much...
They advertise beach access you have to walk about 10 minutes down the road then find a path to walk down a very steep

I've gone back and forth as to whether to allocate 2 or 3 stars. I've thought hard about the descriptor for two stars: "meh, I've experienced better" versus the descriptor for 3 stars: "A-OK". There are some aspects of both those experiences so read this as 2.5 stars.

As nice as the people working here seemed to be, we were disappointed in several key aspects of our stay.
Despite the essentially really excellent reviews on both Yelp and TripAdvisor extolling the cottages on this property, we were underwhelmed. Perhaps it was just our cottage that had these

Solid bet, especially for couples or small families visiting Acadia NP.

Pro: clean, modern cottages. You immediately see that all 12 cottages have been renovated and are presented well. Studio or kitchenette rooms. Flat-screen TV, Keurig coffee maker, fantastic shower (super valuable after a long hike). I suspect the owner is a craftsman given the condition. Also, they completely manage the property (maintain, housekeeping, reservations) as their house is on the property too. Location is outside of the busier Bar Harbor, but is an easy 7min drive in. Pet friendly.

Con: Wi-Fi and heating

My cottage was clean, quiet, and it was obvious that everything had been recently remodeled. Flat screen, free WiFi and they accept pets. What more could you want? Its also just a short walk to Frenchmen's Bay with access to a private beach and great views.
