Well-deserving of the descriptor "boutique, " Loma Prieta makes fewer than 3k cases yearly, yet has single-handedly become the largest producer of Pinotage in North America. Set at 2600 feet on Loma Prieta Way off the Summit Road exit of Highway 17, Loma Prieta is named after the flat-topped mountain that towers to the southeast.
It is here, in the shadow of this iconic peak known for being the epicenter of the 1989 earthquake that bears its name, that you will find one of the most beautiful wineries in all of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Views are mesmerizing in every direction, and you can see the entire Monterey Peninsula and watch waves crashing on the Santa Cruz coastline.

There are only approximately 52 acres planted in the whole state, according to the CSDA 2019 crop report. Compare this to 95k acres of Cabernet in the ground, and you can grasp the concept of "scarce." The original Loma Prieta Winery owners, Amy and Paul Kemp, planted their 3-acre estate vineyard to Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Cabernet.
The wonderful painting depicted on our label was created especially for Loma Prieta Winery by New Orleans artist Martin LaBorde. It is alive with imagery. For example, the rolling green mountains in the background depict the view of Mt. Loma Prieta as seen from the Loma Prieta Winery. The yellow, red, and orange running beneath the mountains represent the famous 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
Stay on Summit Road (heading East) for about 6 miles, until you come to the 1st and only stop sign. Summit Rd will change names during this to Highland Way, but don't worry about looking for street names; stay on the main road. During the course of this 6 miles you will pass the Loma Prieta School, Burrell School Winery, Summit Store, Soquel-San Jose Road and the Fire Station.
The enthusiastic reception our wines have continually received from critics and consumers alike is our reward for the painstaking care and love that goes into every lot. We source our Cabernet, Chardonnay, Pinot, Pinotage, Petite Sirah and Viognier from the best vineyard sites, including our own mountaintop estate vineyard, the highest in the US (2600') growing Pinotage.

This is a spectacular winery in many ways. Located near the summit ridge of the Santa Cruz Mountains, it is certainly off the beaten track. But once you find it you will be treated to magnificent vistas of mountain peaks, and dense pine forests looking steeply down on panoramic views of Santa Cruz and the Monterey Bay. Outdoor tables are an ideal spot to enjoy a stunningly scenic picnic while wine tasting. There's even a bocce court clinging to the side of the mountain. But the real reason to go is their wines. Quite frankly, there's not a big list to choose from here for white wine lovers, but
