My goal is to provide the highest level of foot and ankle care with unsurpassed dedication to each patient. With a conservative approach centered on patient education and understanding, I treat each patient with compassion and respect. I work diligently to establish a comprehensive diagnosis and provide a patient-specific treatment plan, taking into account the patient's individual goals, expectations, and lifestyle.
Dr. Pontell and his wife, Ellyn, live in Northern Virginia, are the proud parents of two adult sons and enjoy active, outdoor activities including road cycling and skiing. Dr. Pontell is the founding partner of Dominion Foot and Ankle Consultants in Fairfax, Virginia, whose mission is to provide outstanding, personalized foot and ankle care to every individual it serves.
To make sure there are no delays in care during your first visit experience, please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment to ensure your registration is complete before meeting with your new provider. In an effort to respect the time of all of patients, our staff strives to stay on schedule so that other patients do not have to wait.

Dr. Hallivis saved my left ankle! I was kicked by a horse which pulverized a portion of my left Fibula. He surgically repaired the bone and offset ankle joints with a plate, screws and new bone within days. His followup has been thorough, friendly and confidence building. At the same time he removed a very painful spur on my big toe. I am over 50 and plan to see Dr. Hallivis for any and all my foot issues in the future.

Dr. Robert Hallivis surgically repaired my Achilles Tendon and removed a large heel spur. I could not have asked for a better doctor. I have 14 different surgical procedures with many different doctors. I would say that I would return to Dr Hallivis for any needed foot work. He has a great demeaner with his patients and takes all the time you need to get any questions answered, explains things clearly and I never left the office feeling overwhelmed. 5 STARS from me. I have been going to Dr. Hallivis for many years. He is very kind and has been very open about options regarding potential treatments. He has a great "bedside" manner and doesn't keep patients waiting. Everyone at Dominion Foot and Ankle is very friendly and professional. I've been going to Dr. Pontell for a host of foot injuries I've experienced over many years. He's also fit me for custom orthotics, which are fantastic. Additionally, a friend of mine stepped on a spiny sea urchin while snorkeling on a vacation. His practice was the only one of many called, who were willing to undertake the very time consuming, laborious extraction of dozens and dozens urchin needle fragments that were imbedded in her foot. They are the best!!!

Dr. Pontell provided outstanding service in sanding down a growth on the ball of my foot and recommending a reasonably priced shoe insert to prevent regrowth. But his billing department is a nightmare, causing repeated insurance claim denials and improper bills for the claim balance because they seem unable to bill the correct Blue Cross Blue Shield affiliate.

I have just completed my treatments under the care of Dr. Hallivis. I had the pleasure of being his patient for 5 weeks at the Wound Care Center on the Inova Fair Oaks Campus. The 5-star rating is justified! The qualities I look for in a good physician, Dr. Hallivis possessed them all; from making certain he maintains eye contact, to prioritizing the hand-shake and million-watt smile upon entering the room, to communicating exactly what he'll be doing and is doing. I went to Dr. Hallivis after a podiatric surgery resident recommended him. I had chronic ankle pain for years, and had to stop dancing because of it. Previously, two orthopedists and a podiatrist diagnosed me with achilles tendonitis. I tried orthodics, physical therapists, acupuncture, massage, strength training, and shock wave therapy, with no relief. Dr. Halliivs did a quick assessment and said he doubted it was tendonitis. After the xray he told me I had posterior impingement syndrome, which is commonly misdiagnosed as achilles tendonitis. He gave me a shot in the bone that was causing

I had a triple fracture in my ankle and the orthopedist I saw in the Emergency Room dumped the day before my scheduled surgery because this was a Federal Government Workers Comp case. I called Dr.Hallivis's office in a panic because I had been told that I only had a short amount of time between the break and the surgery to prevent the ankle from healing improperly. I saw him on Thursday and he my had surgery scheduled for Monday afternoon. Dr. Hallivis has a wonderful bedside manner and really knows his stuff. He's funny and truly cares about his patients. I had absolutely no complications

I was recommended to this practice for a second opinion on a fracture by the orthopedist my GP recommended. The waiting room was full (not enough chairs), it seemed that they had more appointments than doctor (there were 2 working) time. When the doctor saw me, he was very perfunctory, spending about 10 minutes discussing xray results and options. He seemed knowledgeable but curt. After the appointment when I called the office with a question (could I drive?), they never called me back. Office contact said she never called me back since doctor never answered her question. Was referred to Dr. Hallivis by another podiatrist. I was pregnant and had a BAD case of plantar warts! He has the touch and was able to remove them with 100% success. I had them burned off over 20 times at the dermatologist office and saw another podiatrist with 2 separate surgeries. If you are going to endure the pain, make sure it works!!
Easy to get an appointment. Office moved to Fairfax late 2011.
