My dog has been living with my spouse and I here since we adopted her and because everybody here is so nice we seem to have kind of a fan club with her. This community is very dog-friendly and cats are loved here, as well. It's a good place to raise a family too, because Berkeley is known to have some of the best schools. I hope if you find yourself near us you will come and see The Higby! This is a new construction and it's in a great neighborhood of very vibrant and colorful folks.

It's been over a year and I have still have not received any response about my security deposit. I left the apartment in perfect shape, and much cleaner than when they gave me the keys. Sent countless emails, made countless phone calls. These people are not honest and will steal your money.

Turning this place into a bit scary. Management needs to teach managers rules of engagement that doesn't break the law. Entire recycling area is left open (back garage) to the street, leaving tenants exposed to increasing crime in the area. Risky behavior. Anti-Asian vibe.

Probably the most egregiously careless and useless management of any apartment building on the planet. This place is a blight upon the neighborhood, and you will be seen as complicit in that if you decide to live in this gentrification rat trap.

Less a review of the actual apartments, which we thought were nice but of our experience trying to rent here. Me and my girlfriend were looking for place, this was walking distance to her work and when we toured it we really liked it. The problems came when we applied.
We needed to make an adjustment on our application because of an increase in income right after we applied, I emailed about it and then didn't hear anything for several days. Once we heard back I sent the information for the adjustments and was told that we had an estimated date to hear back. I reached out to follow up and was told

I recently moved in Higby and Taeja, the leasing manager has made my entire application/ move in process super easy. She has been available, accommodating, and helpful every time I have needed her assistance and she has done it all with a smile and welcoming attitude. She is very professional, personable, and stays on top of everything. She responds to needs and or concerns in a reasonable amount of time, keeps open communication and is truly a joy to have as the leasing manager. I know if I need anything, I can count on her assistance to find a solution or she will refer me to the correct person

I thought I'd love to live here, but it turns out they don't respond to emails and none of the 3 phone numbers for them (main page, FB chat, FB page) work. This does NOT make me trust that management would be responsive to my needs if I lived there. I guess I'll look elsewhere to live!

Update: they overcharged 900 for our last month of rent and blamed us because we were signed up for autopay. They have yet to refund us the money they wrongly charged and have not refunded us our deposit. Their phone is also disconnected. It’s been over 30 days.
I’ve lived in this apartment for a year and I’m so ready to move out! The new owners and front desk are impossible to contact. I’ve emailed my 30 days and called for 3 days and still have no response and no idea how to get my deposit. The office is closed, but the people who work in the office are still there...watching tv in the

It's unusual to write a review for a place that I haven't even been to, but for Higby this seems like it's needed.

I've called, used the Contact Us page, used Facebook, and Insta to try to reach someone to talk with about viewing a place but no response.

It's crazy that they're doing this to potential clients but I see they're also dodging prior renters as well.

In this rental market no less, I guess Higby's property management team just doesn't like having any business or money?

We moved out 8 months ago in March of this year. We still do not have our security deposit back. They do not answer phone calls or emails. We have even gone in physically since moving out and spoken to the manager Alex Brunet in person who has made empty promises to return our money back to us. The first time he said he would send it, the second time he said he would have it "re-sent" via certified mail. We have not received it to this day. We've utilized their Former Resident Care service at Greystar (Higby's property management company) and are still waiting for a resolution

I agree with the rest of the reviews. Management is terrible. Never answer emails, or voicemails. I have left 6 voicemails and 4 emails over the course of a month and never receive a reply. They still have my security deposit and will simply ignore you. The property itself is quite nice though the neighborhood and parking sucks.

I lived at Higby from 2019 to 2020. Our apartment was fine (although many of the apartment windows face inwards towards an internal courtyard with bright lights on 24/7). My roommates and I have moved out for a month and no one has responded to our emails trying to confirm our move out and recover our security deposit. Unfortunately, the management in the Higby has consistently been very unresponsive.

Never answered phone or emails about scheduling a tour. How do they expect people to apply and sign leases if they never get back to you? Sucks, because it looked like a nice place to live.

I lived at Higby from early June 2019 to early July 2020. I loved it. It is probably pretty similar to other apartments in the west East Bay (e.g. the Aquatic) in terms of many of the things I was looking for (build quality, building security, soundproofing). The reasons I chose Higby specifically were the location, the relatively high ceilings, and the nice big windows and patio that some of the units have.

I never felt unsafe in the neighborhood or building, or noticed messes not getting cleaned up (though the recycling area does overflow sometimes). The 1-2 times I had a maintenance request

Wish I could give negative stars. We moved out early May and after many, MANY follow ups via phone and email, have not received a response regarding A) our final rent cost for the few days in May we were there or B) our security deposit and TWO pet deposits. Both numbers listed online are disconnected. No one picks up the phone at the # we normally used to get in touch with them, regardless of time of day. Stay away.

I hate to give it a 1-star review yet, but it's getting close. We moved here almost 3 years ago and have found each change in management has made this place worse. There used to be a resident portal for questions, maintenance requests, and community. That's all gone, and there is no way to contact management easily unless you manage to find someone during open office hours. This is a challenge because it seems to staff, if they are present at all, come in late and leave early. The resident login only allows you to pay your overpriced rent. This building is a nuisance, a mess. Three piercingly loud, ear damaging, false fire alarms in one weekend. No one from management around to help firefighters locate the problem. Hope the city charges them for diverting these critical resources. Over the year we've had one at 3 am that lasted for two hours (people standing out on the street in their pajamas), one at 5 am, another at 8 am on a Saturday morning.

Since we've been here there have been four managers, countless assistants, three housekeepers, three building engineers - currently there is no onsite maintenance staff. The building

I have lived here since Jan. 2019 and since then, the management has been very responsive to my requests for service and also in terms of caring about the tenants. Anytime there is an issue with my unit, the management responds in short order. Aja and Terrence are always available and demonstrate interest and concern for their tenants.and I would recommend this building if you are interested in living where the tenants are priority number one.

Old management team Sebastian, Emily and Jaime were fantastic. We experienced serious declines in our engagement with the management team once they moved on and new replacements came on board. Its a fine place to live, we had a positive experience but expect to send a lot of emails to get anything done (ex: 30+ days and still waiting for my security deposit to be returned after we moved out).

It's just not a pleasant experience living in Higby. Management staff don't usually respond to your requests and they don't really have a clear schedule of their office time, which means you can't find them when you need them. Parking lot has issues all the time, which causes a lot of inconvenience. False alarm went on multiple times in the past couple months, including one at midnight. Just don't choose Higby.

Saw the building from the street and it looked cool. Went to the website and it looked cool too! I am in need of an apartment in Berkeley and they show they have units available and even have specials, so I'm assuming they must be motivated to get my business...Not exactly!

I sent in an email enquiry through the website. Included my number to call me to schedule a tour. I also called their phone number to make an appointment...Left a voicemail for them to call me for a tour. Their voicemail message says you can schedule a tour on their website....I could not find this on the website.

I lived at Higby from 8/2016 until 11/2018. Although there were some issues mentioned in some of the previous reviews, I think many of these issues are normal and presently, to my knowledge, they have all been resolved.

I have never felt unsafe living here and security improvements have been made.

Moreover, the newer staff (Sebastian et al) are excellent.

The maintenance is also quick to address problems and professional.

Parking is available on site which is a huge plus and they don't overcharge here. The units are spacious and comfortable and modern, tho some improvements could be

I'm most definitely a fan. The management team bends over backwards to keep all the tenants smiling. Jaime, Emily and Sebastian are a fantastic team. They coordinate special, "Wine down Wednesday's", and other events to create a nice sense of community.
The building is immaculately clean, things are always in working order.. and in the event something breaks, I believe Jaime can beat the land-speed record to be at your door to fix it.
We are very happy here. I'd definitely recommend this building to others looking for a nice place to live
