With Pilates trainining it is possible to add a deeper level of strength to the body. This incredible fitness discipline creates instability in the body and forces the stabilizing muscles to activate. We use the vestibular system within the inner ear to cause the "fight or flight" instinct in the body to activate.

The central nervous system then involuntarily activates the smaller stabilizing muscles at the bone to contract, thereby giving new found strength in new places. These stabilizing muscles are what keep us upright, safe and balanced. As we age, stabilizing muscles lose strength unless we are actively workng to keep them engaged.

Jospeh Pilates was the Albert Einstein of the human body and biomechanics. Mr. Pilates delveoped his discipline in the 1920's, which he called "Contrology." He had an inherent understanding of biomechanics and kinesiology.

Some of the main tenets of Pilates are: Controlled movement (no momentum, no gravity affecting contractions), spinal articulation, strengthening the body from the feet up, pelvic floor strength, core stregnth, posterior chain strength and learning to move the peripheral muscles from the core.Correct movement patterns save the spine from injury in movement and the joints from over use.
At Wimberley Pilates, we are passionate about Pilates and for good reason. We offer several types of Pilates training options to meet your needs. The intelligence and mindfulness inherit in the tenets of Pilates provide the body with a style of movement and training that builds deep strength from the bone out.
Mardee Calkins has been practicing Pilates for more than twenty years and recevied her first certification to teach fitness 22 years ago. After a tramatic car accident at 19, Mardee found that Pilates was the only thing that seemed to keep her out of pain and her spine stable. Mardee has three comprehensive Pilates certifications through BASI Pilates, Pilates Academy International and the Pilates Method Alliance.

Mardee is one of the most knowledgeable, intelligent, and alignment focused fitness instructors I’ve ever known. I’ve live in NYC, Houston, Austin and San Francisco, and worked in fitness myself. I am so grateful to have a lovely boutique pilates fitness studio right here in the heart of Wimberley, my current home base. The studio feels like a nested tree house sitting above cypress creek. Mardee always gives her clients the utmost attention not only physically, but in a holistic sense given her knowledge of nutrition and awareness of energy. I love her classes and highly recommend it to locals
