This section governs Department of State-designated exchange visitor programs under which foreign nationals are afforded the opportunity to live with an American host family and participate directly in the home life of the host family. My now husband came to the US to work as a nanny with au pair internaional from Colombia. Not only the disfuncional family he was living with treated him unfairly but also the staff of the agency, the regional manager even blocked his number to keep him from contacting her, he just wanted help/advice with the issue he had with the crazy family in this country far from home. The Magluilo family from Boulder CO and the au pair internaional located in Boulder CO were really inhumane leaving a human being all alone in a unknown country with barely any money to buy his plane ticket back to Colombia

One of the best decisions I made for myself and our kids was hiring an Au Pair through Au Pair International. I get 45 hours a week of childcare in my home and I can change the hours to fit my schedule. The beauty of having an Au Pair live with you is:

When you do the math it works out to about $8.50 per hour.

We didn't have a great experience as a host family. Their area reps switched out every 2 to 3 months. The first two were completely useless, the third might have been decent but wasn't working with us long, and the fourth just started recently. (Edit: the forth isn't any better) It took them almost six months to get our au pair's email right, during which time she was left on her own. I would have said the one reason to go with this agency is that they are cheaper than the rest, but they recently raised their rates making that less of a point in their favor.
