Dr. Chen was born in Shanghai, China, and grew up in the British Colony of Hong Kong. He came to the United States after high school to pursue further education. After graduating from Erskine College, he attended Emory University School of Medicine where he received his M.D. as well as completed his dermatology internship.
He then served in the military as a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force at Clark Air Base in the Philippines. Upon returning to the United States, he trained in the dermatology specialty in the United States Navy at Naval Regional Medical Center in San Diego, CA. Dr Chen has received certificates of special trainings in Aerospace Medicine and Infectious Disease.

Here I am five years down the line, I continue to receive exceptional care from Dr. Chen for my condition and he has never wavered in his pursuit to help ease my suffering. On 11/4/21,I called this practice to make an appointment for my mother.I spoke with May and confirmed they do take her insurance,made the appointment for 11/16/21and gave her all insurance info needed.She said she'll take care of it and see you on the 16th.Well,my mom never got to see the doctor on 11/16/21.We arrived and were the only patient, signed in, proceeded to give May all of mom's info- ID, Insurance cards,Covid vaccination cards,etc.She glanced at my stack of medical records in hand- made the comment of how thick the stack was,and said no need for them.So, I just gave her the

I called the office looking for an sooner appointment as a new patient. I spoke with Mae in the front office and she was so attentive and concerned for my need for an urgent appointment. Upon arrival at my appointment I was pleased to meet her in person. She was just as helpful in person. My visit with Dr. Chen met all expectations. I was so comfortable with his diagnosis and confident that he knows what he is doing. I'm so grateful to have found my new dermatologist. Thank you Mae and Dr. Chen!!!

Recently, it's very hard to make an appointment over the phone. The new front person say they are super busy and swamp, but that's not a proper reason not taking appointments or not calling the patient back.

My daughter have been going to Dr. Tommy Chen for the past 5 years. It has always been a pleasant experience with scheduling the appointment and visitations. The young ladies that use to work at the front desk was always super helpful.
Since last year 2020, the pandemic, we have not visited.
Now that we are ready to go back to normal doctor visitations. I have been trying to schedule an appointment, but I find out it is nearly impossible to even get the front desk lady to stay on the phone to get the appointment availability.
She is very ridiculous, very rude, either tells you she will call

I was recently referred to Dr Chen after seeing my previous dermatologist for many years. I had my first appt with him last week and I couldn't be more happy and grateful for the referral! Super clean office. His bedside manner is top notch. He is very knowledgeable, professional, patient, caring and took his time to answer my many question and explained everything to me very thoroughly. I did not feel rushed at all. He even took the time to call me on a Saturday morning to go over some results which I really appreciated! Dr Chen is by far the best dermatologist I have ever been to!

I tried to get an appointment today. The person answered the phone was loud and rude. She kept telling me I don't know what I'm doing and she kept saying they won't accept my insurance before checking my insurance card. She said she won't make an appointment for me unless I'm going to pay out of my pocket.

This review is long overdue.
My mother in law got a very bed allergic reaction to seafood which gave her horrible rash all over her body, her skin was extremely itchy and those rash were not going away after 2 weeks... so she finally agreed to go see a doctor.
My MIL speaks a little English and she was lucky to find Dr. Chen who could speak Cantonese with her. Dr. Chen is patient and he is also a good listener. We both can feel that he is the kind of doctor who would truly care about his patients.
My MIL felt better in 3 days after she went to see Dr.Chen, we were grateful :)

Dr. Chen is the best dermatologist I've ever have . I have rosacea, he treated me twice and the improvements in my skin condition were amazing . Unfortunately I haven't visited him lately due to the pandemic . I tried to make a tele health appointment but his assistant, Mai, doesn't want to do it because she thinks my insurance won't cover it , even though I provided her all the information she needs because they do cover it. I don't understand the negative reviews either. Dr. Chen treated my full body guttate psoriasis over 10 years ago. Because of his help, I've learned how to control the flare ups on my own. He is great and I highly recommend him. Also, anyone who judges a doctor for office staff has their priorities all wrong.

Dr. Chen has been amazing in caring for my 91 year old mother for many years. He, along with Dr. Todd Turner, are two of her favorite doctors, and now mine as I help care for my mom. Dr. Chen went over-the-top to be available through phone and text when my mom fell last June injuring the skin on her arm and breaking her hip. Covid did not stop Dr. Chen as he personally cared for her needs. When she was finally able to see him in person this last month, I was so impressed with his kind, caring and friendly personality. Dr Chen was excellent!!! Professional, thorough and a wonderful bedside manner. He was patient and did not rush the consultation answered all my questions and gave me peace of mind. I am very picky and research all doctors and although he has some not so favorable reviews, I must say that I had a wonderful experience and hIghly recommend him.

Waited over a month to see this Dermatologist. No reminder call whatsoever. Upon arrival to building had to see parking attendant. Parking attendant told me that Dr Chen's Office would validate parking. I go inside and ask Dr Chen's staff if they validate parking, they say no you have to pay for parking. They said we told you when you made appointment (over one month ago). I left, did not stay for appointment and will never return..... Not a good experience.

Dr. office: Even though we are in-network with your insurance plan and you should only pay $25, you have to pay upfront because we don't want to go through the hassle of billing the insurance. You should pay us and claim it yourself.

Worst place ever!!!!! I called to make an appointment a month in advance.. receptionist forgot I was on the line. I had to call back and try again to make an appointment and did. The day before my appointment, I called to confirm because apparently they "dont do that courtesy." Turns out they didnt even have me in the books and found my name and info on some piece of paper that they failed to enter into the calendar. Hipaa anyone?!

Dr. Chen will require you to pay your medical bill up front which is painful. Good doctors will bill your insurance directly. Beware of 5 star reviews on Yelp and Google, Dr. Chen's wife is gaming the reviews. I just called my insurance and they said typically doctors will bill the insurance first, but at times they will bill you directly. Then you have to go through the hassle of claiming it with insurance. All in all, inefficient billing process and mediocre care. Went to multiple doctors, this was one I would not go back to until they improve their billing process and service.

Entire family and I have been seeing Dr. Chen for over 10 years. Great doctor, professional and friendly staff. Dr. Chen has been giving me ongoing light treatment for my psoriasis in the last 7 years. Very satisfied with results.
Person below (who apparently has never even been to Dr. Chen's office) must be confused between co-pay and deductible. All insurance holders must fulfill their own deductible before they are only responsible for co-pays. It's not the Dr's responsibility to know each person's insurance policies. Check the back of your own card for your general & specialty copay amounts
