Attachment and learning/behavior are the core principles of human relationships. We have a unique capacity to attach that is vital to happiness. Yet, for all the complex force and feeling of attachment, we are also simple: rewards and consequences can be structured to shape behavior, whether conscious or habitual.
Mentalization is the capacity to understand that people act (converse, create, explore, etc.) because of what is in their mind - feelings, goals, expectations, etc. Mentalization can be thought of as what encompasses both mindfulness (self-directed understanding) and empathy (other-directed understanding).
Anxiety, sadness, frustration, guilt, or other emotions may knock any of us off balance at one time or another. Importantly, different problems require different types of talk therapy and each therapy should be tailored to your or your child's needs. I am fully versed in the latest research that provides a firm evidence base for several types of psychotherapy.
The best number of medications for anyone to take is zero. When zero is not a realistic option, we will work together to identify your choices and weigh the pros and cons. You can expect me to recommend medications that are safe, supported by evidence, at the lowest possible therapeutic dose, with a goal of experiencing no side effects.
You or your child may already have a therapist and simply want to learn more about options for medication. You may be looking for a second opinion, or ready to consider a change in providers. Or, you may not be sure whether a problem of clinical significance even exists. I would be glad to talk things over and offer my professional guidance.
