I am a psychologist with 38 years of experience working with children, adolescents and their parents. While I have offices in Silver Spring and Rockville, MD, currently I am working virtually using a confidential and HIPAA compliant video platform. I provide psychotherapy to children and adolescents and their families.
In addition, I work with college age students. My goal as a therapist has always been to help people understand themselves better; to embrace the things they are good at and to forgive themselves for their shortcomings. An additional goal then is to help parents understand their children. Most of the time I have learned that people want to be loved, listened to and understood.

Between college and graduate school I worked for a year at the National Institute of Mental Health as a research assistant on a project about mother-child interaction. During that program I had the privilege of working part time at the Georgetown University Child Development Center where I was immersed in working with children and their families under supervision of some excellent child psychologists.
A key goal of child rearing is to raise a person who is an independent contributing member of society, preferably with health insurance. Many parents come to me and say they just want their child to be happy. However I have encountered many children who are happy playing video games and watching You Tube videos in their parents' homes and have no motivation to move on with their lives.
Initially I meet with parents for a consultation. At that time I learn about the child's history and about the parents' concerns. With teenagers, I often include adolescents in this interview. I also review any relevant documents such as prior evaluations, IEP and 504 accommodation plans, and report cards.
Perhaps your child's teacher has raised concerns that your child has difficulty focusing and paying attention. The teacher may have even suggested that you have your child evaluation for ADHD. What does this mean? People can have ADHD and it can look very different from person to person. Some children have difficulty sitting still.
Anxiety is a part of life. We all feel anxious from time to time. However for some people anxiety can become disabling. For these people, there is help and hope. There are several different kinds of anxiety disorders that can all be experienced by children and teenagers as well as adults. People with Generalized Anxiety Disorder experience intense fear and anxiety about many different aspects of their lives.
