Shanghai Beauty Salon opened their doors in February of 2000. The location was previously occupied by 3 different salons. Each of the salons were short-lived and closed its doors due to the lack of business. Joyce Wang, came across the store front and was optimistic. She established Shanghai Beauty Salon single-handly and have been successfully opened for 15 years and counting.
Joyce has 30 years of experience with hair and has worked at 2 different salons before establishing her own. She immigrated to the United States 25 years ago and has come to achieve the American dream. Due to English being a second language, she asks you all to be patient with her. Joyce promises to be patient with you and will try her best to achieve your desired look.

This is the first time writing a review on yelp. andunfortunately, it's a bad one.
I've been going to there for few times because it's close to home.but I do not recommend this place .I showed her a picture but maybe she is limited on technique,
Totally different hairstyle .She also told me that's it is same as the picture ....What??? Is there a problem with my eyes? Same????（see my pictures) Can't believe this is from a "professional "hairstylist
I told her I'd like my hair layered
But she use a razor chopped off

Joyce is an amazing hairstylist, with a 25+ years of experience. She doesn’t make over the top prices and is very kind person. Can listen to requests and she will make that request to the best of her abilities. My first day and my hair is soft as silk. Love it and highly recommend! But don’t forget to get a appointment before hand.

I do not recommend this place. The lady messed up my bangs. Cut it too short even though I told her where I want it to end. She didnt listen and just cut it. Its common sense that most people wouldnt want bangs too short. And then she was rushing it as she was cutting the rest of my hair. If you dont want my business then just refuse to service me. The conclusion is DO NOT come here unless you want bad service and bad haircut.

Me: I had colored my natural (formerly blue-black) hair red for a few years. I wanted to completely change to gray with purple. I had developed an allergic reaction to permanent hair color (blistering sores), and could only use semi-permanent color. I researched online for Olaplex salons, after reading up on how Olaplex is the magic to saving hair from being fried from bleaching and/or coloring. I called one salon and was quoted $500 for the job, entailing 3 stylists and 8 hours. I called Joyce and she quoted me

TL;DR: Come here if you're looking for a perm AND want to look like a poodle AND feel disappointed afterwards.
After much pondering, I finally decided to perm my straight hair because the curl envy was too real. I wanted a body wave perm and came prepared with pictures because a perm is just that--permanent--and I needed to make sure what I wanted was realistic and achievable with my hair. I came to Joyce because I wanted to support a small business in my neighborhood and she was more than happy to make it happen (wet perm) and said she's done a lot of them before.

Walk-in. Had Joyce. Told her I wanted a a-line cut. Showed 3 pictures of the same style different angle all were shoulder length and longer. I had medium length hair 2 inches past shoulders. Told her I wanted to keep it long. Repeated myself multiple times that I wanted to keep my hair long and that I needed to be able to put my hair up which I am no longer able to. She chopped off 4 inches and kept telling me it's still longer than the photos I showed her. Which it was not!! I would never in my life cut my hair this short. Just received an amazing long a-line cut (4 or 5 inches off). The lady understood everything I wanted and it came out looking better than if I were to pay more for the cut.. It was only $20, what a steal!
Also, I read a few other reviews about this place and it is true that the stylists use mostly razors to cut your hair (well, at least mine did). I would recommend anyone with wavy or curly hair to straighten it first before going in. I think that makes it easier to cut with the razors.

As a recent college graduate looking for a new look, i walked into this hair salon about 5 minutes from where I lived. I didn't have high expectation knowing that this is not your typical Height-Ashbury-expensive-hipster salon. But I was glad I came in.

I came by here because I was looking for a short haircut with a perm. Joyce did an amazing job. Because it took a while, I was glad to be around the chit chat too. I am Shanghainese and I felt like I was in the middle Shanghai listening to everybody "chew and gossip". Will definitely be coming back again. Just wish I didn't live so far away!
