Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority (WWRA) is a partnership of five municipalities working together to find alternative ways to handle waste and promote recycling. WWRA operates independently of the City of Chelsea and is funded by 2 assessments that appear on the Winter Tax bill. One assessment for paying the bond used to buy the new equipment and the other is an operational assessment.
WWRA offers weekly curbside recycling to Chelsea residents and provides convenient drop-off bins throughout our entire service area. REMINDER: We cannot recycle plastic bags. Thank you for your cooperation! Stay on top of the latest tips and info brought to you by the WWRA, starring Reggie the Recycling Raccoon!

Services
The Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority (WWRA) is a Non Profit Public Recycling Program that was formed in 1991 with a State Grant to help Protect Michigans Future by local residents. This Grant helped finance the construction of the 4200 square foot facility located at 8025 Werkner Road in Chelsea.
In late 2009 and with considerable intensity during 2010, WWRA pursued the concept of all new equipment and a new building to house the equipment. WWRA is formed under Public Act 185, which is for the control and collection of solid waste and applies to governmental units. As such, WWRA is not permitted to borrow money for any purposes whatsoever and may only obtain funding by the sale of bonds.
Plastic bottles #1-7 - such as milk jugs and detergent bottles, cottage cheese, yogurt, etc. Remove caps and lids, rinse well and flatten, labels may be left on. Rigid plastics such as plastic buckets, soda crates, plastic pallets, coolers, drums, toys and playhouses, plastic flower pots, laundry baskets, empty garbage cans, plastic pet containers.
Leaving these items and any trash in the bins or at the sites is considered ILLEGAL DUMPING and may be subject to a $1,000 fine. And that means more stuff. Please keep in mind we can't recycle everything (as much as we would like to!) We CAN accept wrapping paper, but not the plasticy/shiny kind. We can take boxes, but please remove any styrofoam inside.

I have used this place faithfully for many many years. I've taken regular trash here. I've taken recyclables here (including oil, drop off last I knew was by the recycle bins). And I've taken like house or garage clean out days trash here. They are fairly priced and friendly! They are open as posted but you should be aware they observe some holidays some of us do not get (e.g. presidents day) and they'll be closed for that weekend. This is posted on their website.
