Sagato Bakery & Cafe
Sagato Bakery and Cafe is a bakery inspired by the foods of New Zealand, Australia and the Polynesian region of the Pacific. Savory meat pies, cream puffs and lamingtons share the spotlight with Polynesian favorites such as pani popo, pineapple custard pie or guava cake. Our family has been offering these treats in Utah since 1994 and we're excited for you to enjoy our family's labor of love at our official storefront location in Midvale.

In addition to meat pies and pastries, we also offer Samoan favorites such as pani popo, pictured here to the right. Pani popo literally translates to coconut buns, a delectable roll similar to the texture of a cinnamon roll, baked to golden perfection in a custard made of coconut milk.
Services
It was in 1994 when Loi and Tualagi Sagato decided to share their special talents with the rest of the world. It began as a way to earn extra money for their young family of seven at a park in Kearns, Utah, with just a small folding table and tote filled with kekepua'a (steam buns) and pineapple pies.

We stopped here yesterday afternoon for a quick bite in between sightseeing activities. It's in a strip mall and the place itself is nondescript though there is a lovely mural on the wall.

We ordered two meat pies (steak & cheese; sausage), a koko samoa, and a strawberry lamington. Sweet treats are better than savory ones. The pies had decent crusts but the steak meat was chewy and the sausage was unappetizing. We loved the flavors on the samoa cake, but it crumbled every time one of us tried to take a forkful and was a bit dry overall. The lamington was a surprise hit: a simple vanilla

I really enjoyed the Potato Top and Custard Tart. I'm already planning on going back and ordering more items to try. The atmosphere there is really relaxing and comfortable. I'd definitely try this place out for a decent lunch.

I mean by the time a place has over 100 reviews in SLC and has over a 4 star rating, I feel like my review is just a meaningless drop in the bucket.

But. Here goes! Meat pies- absolutely delish YUMYUM! The space has a bit of a cafe feel with a couch to chill on, there were folks there having meetings and other folks catching up with friends, still other folks getting their goods to go. I couldn't help it- added on some sweet treats- I wasn't a fan of the fruit tart (filling was more pudding/marshmallow fluff than custard) but my husband sure was. Had my first lamington, and that was

My husband has is from New Zealand and has been here in America almost 4 years and this place is the closest to the meat pies back home. He always talks about how he misses the meat pies. Back home, he would go early to the bakery and buy them fresh out of the oven. Prices are different then back in New Zealand but the taste is incredible!

Every bakery usually has one thing that makes it a destination location…. This one has way more than one! Just start with the custard tart or haupia cake.
Great service from Nicole today on our first visit for a good sampler selection, thanks!

Love everything from this Bakery, they make the best coconut cake with real haupia, and toasted coconut. Their Lamingtons are always a winner, best pastry on their meat pies, so good, they offer catering to feed a crowd as well!

AMAZING. We came by while visiting and this is without a doubt the best haupia cake we've ever had (my husband grew up in Hawaii). The savory pies were also delicious. I would 100% return.

This place was recommended to me by friends from New Zealand as it's a New Zealand bakery.
We ordered Fish and Chips ahead by phone as we were 40 minutes out. Our fish was done just a few minutes after we arrived and was nice and hot.
The fish batter is nice and crispy and neither the batter or fish is too oily. The fish is nice and big too. You can get one peice or two. The chips (fries) are your average classic chips that come with fish.
The inside is nice and clean including the bathrooms. Lots of sections for their pies and desserts.

This is a difficult review, I place it at 3.5 stars over 4.
I had the fish and chips. The fish was tender and well battered which was wonderful. It was flavorful, and quite delightful. The chips, or fries, tatsed bought in from a huge catering bag, I've worked in catering for years and the taste is noticable. Slightly disappointed.
I didn't have any pies or desserts however based of their appearance I would place them as good value for money, and quite delicious. Numerous regulars came in whilst I was eating.
I'm not in a hurry to return, however it's on my list if I'm in the area.

I saw this place on Instagram and immediately wanted to try because I really like Hawaiian/Polynesian food. I would say out of all the things I tried, I really enjoyed the meat pie! If I come here again, I'd like to try more of the pies than the pastries.

The guava cake and bundt cake were pretty decent! I wasn't a fan of all the cream though.

The lunch plate was a little disappointing because the teriyaki sauce was thick and goopy. The beef was also a more fatty cut of meat. Other than that, the rice was honestly cooked to perfection and the Mac salad was great.

I had to get my Sagato fix before heading home. Steak & cheese, mince & cheese meat pies. Unfortunately, the filling was on the salty side but the flaky crust good as ever.
The chocolate lamington was fire! Imho, better than back home in NZ! Haven't tasted the koko samoa cake or strawberry lamington yet but I'm sure it's bomb!

My photo doesn't do the food justice. We tried all 5 of the meat pies and loved all of them - I think the chicken was my favorite. The short cake was also delicious. Can't believe this was so close to home and I'd never been - will definitely be back to try more.
Update: Finally went back to try the meats. Top notch. Beef is my favorite.

Prices are higher than expected and the value just isn't there. $11.50 for a single fish and chips. The meat pies are small, maybe 3.5 inches and smaller than you'd see in the freezer section at the store for $5.25. Desserts are generally $3.95 each.
The taste is where its at. Get a meat pie and a dessert. The strawberry cake with cream on top are so moist and soft. They have delicious tarts and the chocolate cakes are a bitter sweet darker chocolate. These are great and hard to find these days.
The service is slower with 1 register to take orders. When I came 4 people were line and it took about

I've come here a few times now for a couple meat pies or pastries. This last time I got the 3-meat plate, with green salad instead of macaroni salad or rice, and WOW do they give you a great portion of meat! It was so good. The Kalua pork is the best, the chicken is so perfect, the beef is a little sweet but yummy.

I also tried one of the pork buns (Kekepua'a this time), which was good. I've liked every single meat pie I've had there, which is, you know, like every flavor. I love the curry chicken pie, and the steak and mushroom/cheese pies are super good too.

My favorite

Family ran establishment. I always feel like my business matters to them. Veteran friendly and partially veteran owned as well. The inside is immaculate and beautiful. Due to Covid, there are understandable restrictions on dining inside. Once this virus passes, I recommend grabbing a meat pie or any number of freshly baked goods, and a koko samoa and chill out on the couch and enjoy the island vibe.

The chicken curry meat pie is insanely good.
The coconut cake is so light, fluffy and coconutty...and not overly sweet like many places tend to produce.
The cream puffs are best cream puffs

What a lovely addition to SLC! The staff is super friendly and safe for COVID. The lamingtons were amazing - chocolate or strawberry to choose from and they were so soft, flavorful and delicious. I also got a teri chicken plate that was amazing! Perfect ratio of rice, Mac salad and chicken. Will be back probably once a week

Sagato is a place that will never disappoint you. Juicy meat pie, scrumptious desserts, and satisfying meal combos!

I have tried all the meat pies but my personal favorite is always the classic Steak & Cheese pie. Flaky crispy crust filled with melty cheesy cheese and "moist" meat. One solid quality pie!

For the meal combo, I always like the teriyaki chicken and Kuala pork with macaroni salad. I have tried teriyaki beef but teriyaki chicken is just my favorite. 2 big pieces of tender juicy chicken marinated in teriyaki sauce. But the Kuala pork is always 80% are juicy and 20

Yes the food is good but every single time I have went to pick up my order which has been over 10 times, the ppl are always rude, they never greet u, they never thank you, make you wait till they fill like getting up from their chit chat table to actually help u. I'm over trying to help out a small business that acts like their doing me a favor by handing me my paid for food when it's convenient for them. Pretty sad, but I don't think they really care either. I'm done giving them my hard earned money in this difficult economy to only lessen my take out food experience with

The bakery was very clean and cute on the inside. Fast, efficient service. Only one person allowed inside at a time. We got pork buns which tasted really good- the bread reminded me of the inside of a doughy pretzel and I liked the pork's sauce. The only drawback was a lot of the chunks were straight fat which grossed me out. I just picked them out and enjoyed the rest though. The chocolate cake had a good texture... little chunks of cacao in it? And a pleasant coffee flavor. I also loved when I got to the middle and the caramel sauce oozed out. My daughter also loved her strawberry cake!

When I first discovered Sagato Bakery, I have wanted to try them. I don't live nor work nearby and then the quarantine started. A few weeks ago I was going to be driving near the area, so I hopped online and placed an order for curbside pickup. We were thrilled that we did. We were joined by my foodie sister so we tried a wide variety of the meat pies and a couple of sweet pastries.

The crust of every meat pie was flakey and delicious. On our first round we tried the steak and cheese, mince and cheese, steak and mushroom, and sausage rolls (we would have tried more, but they were already

OMG!!!! YO!!!! WHAT WHAT!!!

Just a few words to describe the deliciousness that awaits you at Sagato Bakery. Recently moved to utah I was hungry but, wanted to try something different. I use Yelp a lot since I moved as I'm not yet familiar with what's out here. Since it was still "breakfast", I put in bakery and Sagato Bakery popped up. It had a very good rating so I thought why not. From where I live, it's a 15 minute drive but hey it's Saturday and in order to learn your surroundings, one must drive right?

This place does NOT disappoint at all! I ordered

I'm a big fan of dessert, so when I saw photos of the Lamington, Sagato immediately went on my "must try" list. It did not disappoint.

The case was lovely and well-stocked. They have Polynesian plates (similar to L&L or Mo Bettah), which I'd like to go back to try.

I worry about the location of this little gem of a spot. The service was great, and my Lamington was incredibly yummy (though I expected it to be chocolate cake, not yellow). I hope they get enough traffic to stay open!

Took my dad to get a haircut and pick up some reading glasses which are all next to Shane Co and then my buddy ends up telling me about this place and it has been there for a while.

This place serves food from Samoa that are also found in New Zealand and even Australia. The pies were fantastic, loved the flavors and flakey crust. Although I do like the ones in Australia better these were a close 2nd.

They also serve Hawaiian style plate lunches which had ample portions!

What was lacking in my no so humble opinion are the desserts looked delectable but tasted average. My palate is used to a
