The hand and wrist have multiple small joints working together to produce motion. As general term for inflammation in the joints, arthritis can occur in numerous forms. Arthritis can occur as a result of chronic inflammation of a joint and its surrounding tissues, following trauma to a joint, or from a genetic defect.
One of the more common procedures that Dr. John C. Kagan performs for patients in Southwest Florida is carpal tunnel surgery. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that arises from increased pressure on the median nerve of the wrist. Nine crucial tendons pass from the forearm to the hand in a space with the median nerve.
Commonly found on the top of the wrist or the base of the palm, ganglion cysts usually occur as a trauma to the capsule of the wrist joint. This balloon like bump contains a fluid similar to what is normally found in the wrist joint. Treatment for ganglion cysts can involve aspiration with a needle to remove the fluid retained in the cyst, or surgical excision to remove the cyst.
Also known as stenosing tenosynovitis and flexor tendonitis, trigger finger is a condition where the fingers or thumb of the hand snap or lock and may become caught in a bent or fixed position. The affected finger may suddenly straighten out with a quick snap. Trigger finger is caused by the inflammation of a substance known as tenosynovium.

Do not go to this office if you value your time at all. A "first thing in the morning" appointment still means over an hour in the waiting room. How you are an hour behind when you just opened? Who the heck knows. If I wanted to wait forever for medical help I'd go to the ER. I'd get more time with a doctor that way too.

2 months ago today, Dr Kagan did a total knee replacement. Yesterday I
“ graduated” from PT. I can’t say enough good things about Dr K and his staff and the PT department. This is my 2nd knee replacement so I do have something to compare this experience to. Think of it as “the pain of healing” then it doesn’t hurt as much!

Dr. Kagan is by far the best doctor I've ever had the experience of seeing. I cannot thank him enough for being thorough and exhausting all other options before deciding surgery was the way to go. My knee has come such a long way from when I first saw him and his physical therapists. I also in a sense owe my life to him; another thing I couldn't possibly thank him enough for. When no one else would, he listened and took me seriously. I wish I could have taken him with me when I moved out state. Thank you for everything!

Dr. Kagan is definitely a surgeon and not a diagnostician. If you need to see him for a problem and you know what it is - I understand that he is a great surgeon. I went to him to find out what my issue is, he barely examined me. When I questioned him about what he thought my Dx. was and what parts of my back were included in the MRI, he sighed at me, took off his glasses and said to me "look, this is what I do... " then he proceeded to infer that he had others waiting and he would order that recommended test (MRI), I asked him if the MRI would include my shoulders? He replied - "No". He didn't

I had surgery in 1991 and 1993. Dr Kagan was hopeful these surgeries would gain me possibly 10 years because just turning 30 knee replacement was not a good option. Well I have made it 26 years! I do really need knee replacement now and hope to be lucky enough to travel and see Dr. Kagan again. I moved from the area 15 years ago. Thank you Dr. Kagan in my opinion you are the best!
