Gray Ghost is offering wine tastings at the bars. Gray Ghost's grounds and indoors will be open for wine by the bottle or glass and for visitors to enjoy picnics. Curbside and pick-up service continue to be available. Gray Ghost, a family owned and operated winery, is placing Virginia on the international wine map by producing internationally acclaimed fine wines from immaculate vineyards.
All grapes are hand-picked and wine is aged in premium oak barrels. Full-bodied reds are unfiltered and lighter-styled wines are fermented at lower temperatures to enhance fruit character. This emphasis on quality resulted in Gray Ghost being named "Best of the East" by Vineyard and Winery Management Magazine four consecutive years!

A family owned and operated winery, Gray Ghost Vineyards is the dream turned reality for Al and Cheryl Kellert. A chemistry major in college, Al was first introduced to winemaking by a college professor who assisted him in his first fermentation experiment in 1969. Not long after, he met and married Cheryl, and a career transfer landed them in Virginia amidst the beginning of what would soon become the burgeoning wine industry in the state.
Gray Ghost welcomes picnics both inside the winery and on the grounds. Please be advised that per Virginia ABC regulations, outside alcohol is not permitted on the grounds of a Virginia Farm Winery. The main floor and grounds are open to our younger guests, the upstairs lounge is reserved for Adults Only.

I first heard of Gray Ghost Vineyards when driving west on Lee Highway one day. I hadn’t had the chance to visit in person yet, but I recently purchased a bottle of their Seyval Blanc wine as a gift. It arrived promptly (I live in VA, so the shipping was very quick) with no issues. As for the quality of wine, to be determined, but the soil and climate in that area are brilliant, so it is probably on par with Virginia’s fine wines. The name is very cool as well, perhaps one of the most interesting of all Virginians. Would highly recommend, cheers. Cannot wait to visit in person one day.

Wow. First, Al, the founder of the vineyard gave us our tasting. He reminds me of my grandpa which is a win. Second, the wines are fantastic. I have never had a dessert wine I liked. The Adieu dessert wine stopped that streak. Try it. Amazing. Perfectly balanced. The merlot is so good. Cherry is so intense on the nose and palate but with more depth than one would expect from a merlot. I'm generally a red guy but literally every white was awesome. My wife is the big wine drinker, not to say I'm not a fan, but she is the driver behind our wine excursions. This is the first place I've bought a bottle

Was a fine winery. Good tasting wines and very competitive on the price ($5 for a flight of six wines vs. $15 for six across the street at Narmada). Nice picnic seating in the vineyard. No complaints on the wine front. Was just not a fan of the winery being named after a Confederate battalion commander (John Mosby nicknamed the Gray Ghost). No relation to the owners - just a conscious decision to have the business carry that namesake. Not a fan of that, especially in this day and age. Plenty of other wineries in the area to give my money to. My fault for not knowing that going in.

Came here on Sat, Sept 22 with a party of 5. It wasn't too crowded so we were able to get a tasting table without waiting. Our taster, Amy (who also happens to be co-owner) gave us some history about the property and the wines. She was AWESOME and so fun to talk to during our tasting. It was me and 4 guys so we definitely bonded over the girlier things!
I do not say this often AT ALL but I actually liked every wine we tried (it was like 14 wines for $10!). My favorite was the Rangers Red and the Cab Franc. Whatever you think about Cab Franc, you can throw out the window because their Cab

My boyfriend and I stopped in to Gray Ghost Vineyards while doing a wine tasting day in the area as there are a few close by. We had a great experience with our tasting. The property is beautiful. We received great service and left with a few bottles of wine. We came on a very cold day so we are looking forward to coming back in the spring to enjoy some of the beautiful outdoor seating areas.

Very small, private vineyard. Very good wine and peaceful setting. We like the cheese and crackers plate--it was a lot of cheese. Wine tastings are also generous. They have a pretty substantial amount of merchandise for sale, and I love the posters in the middle explaining the history and background of the vineyard.
There's seating indoors on the first floor, casual lounge areas upstairs, outdoors upstairs or outdoors in the back by the vines.
My only warning/complaint is that there was quite a wait on event days. There just isn't time and space on days with the food trucks and band

We have come to this winery for my birthday a year ago and a few other friends bdays throughout the past four years. I really enjoy this vineyard! All the staff are very sweet and will hold conversation with you throughout your tasting. There tasting is very reasonably priced and has a good variety of quality wines. They offer a nice menu of light fare that you can purchase to accompany a glass or bottle of wine that you may purchase to enjoy on site. They have both indoor and outdoor seating to chose from, for both sunny and rainy days For my birthday a large group of friends meet and we pulled

This place offers around 10 wines for a $5 tasting. About half are whites or reds and a dessert type.
The tasting room is small and will hold about 8 or more at a time per table. The rest is open space or lounging area on the second floor.
Outside there is a pleasant seating area and a large apple tree to relax under. Parking is a gravel lot and very spacious and flat unlike other wineries.
As of 2016 Va Go pass provides free tasting. Though at first they did not seem to understand what my card was for. Recommended double check the site for instructions on using the pass.

A delayed review for a wonderful October visit. Small-to-medium sized by VA standards; their 4000 cases/year, 100% estate wines are from the 13 acres of vines you see as you drive by. Amazingly enough, the tasting is only $5 for 9 wines. Grey Ghost easily gets 4 stars; maybe 5 stars when the summer hits and they have a more red-heavy lineup.

I LOVE Gray Ghost! I discovered this winery as I have the 2015 VA wine pass, and boy, am I glad I visited. Four of us walked in on a recent Saturday, and we were quickly acknowledged in the nicest way possible. No one else was there for a tasting, so we got all the attention. Our wine pourer, Sheila, was amazing! Again, Sheila was super awesome and just plain wonderful. She was peppy, helpful, patient, and super sweet. She tolerated all of our questions and even provided some cool facts about wine-making. Very knowledgeable about the goings-on at Gray Ghost.
Now on to the wine tasting: we sampled

8 tastings for $5! What a deal! We found this quaint place after hiking Old Rag and learned about who the true "Gray Ghost" was. Random and a lucky find. Be sure to check it out if you're in the area.
They ran out of their Cabernet Franc which was unexpected but left with their 2013 Ranger Reserve (blend of cab sauv, malbec, petit verdot, merlot, & cab franc), 2013 Reserve Chardonnay (100% malolactic fermentation) and Adieu (sweet but not syrupy sweet). Next time we will be back for that bottle of Cab Franc!

Impressive vineyard with an unhealthy obsession with confederate general John S. Mosby and, thankfully, the same obsession with making fantastic wine. While the website might lead you to believe you might walk into your crazy historian uncle's collection of memorabilia, the tasting room and estate grounds are tastefully decorated and incredibly inviting. Wine glasses from across the world litter shelves in the main tasting area, exploits of the owners' love of wine and travel.
The wines portray this experience, with the real highlights being among the Bordeaux grapes. The Cabernet Franc

Three and a quarter stars. Friendly staff, usual array of kitschy local goods. Couldn't explore much inside with a private party underway, but it's a pleasant space. I'm not a huge fan of whites and that's most of what they happened to be offering at the conservatively poured 8-wine tasting; even the Victorian red stayed in the same vein. That said, theirs aren't too dry and they keep their descriptions brief beyond citing rewards and nominations. Their picnic "lunchables" are a cute option if you didn't bring your own nosh. If the gazebo's taken, the

Gray Ghost is a cute medium sized winery on Lee Highway out in Amissville Va. This year they actually celebrate their 20th year with a black-tie optional gala on November 15, 2014.
IMO, GG is a must see on the VA wine trail. I like most of their wines, but my favorites are the reserve Chardonnay, the Gewurztraminer and the Cab Franc. I also really like that they do annual vertical tastings and now have opened up wine library tastings every few months (check their website for dates and times).
On my first visit here several years ago, I was even fortunate enough to wander in when they were doing

They have a great Reserve Chardonnay here. If you have the VA Wine Pass you get get two free tastings here also, so that was nice. The grounds here are nice and I am sure full of history. We didn't get to hear too much about it though because we arrived at the same time everyone else in town seemed too. It was clearly not their fault though.
I stayed after the tasting and sat outside on the upper deck overlooking the lawn/vineyards. While the view was nice you could hear the highway still and see some powerlines, so it was not a complete retreat. Overall good wine and worth the visit

It was on the other side of the road on 29 on our way out to sperryville so I couldn't help but beg to stop and lemme try some wine real quick...
The tasting fee wasn't atrocious and included 10 or so wines if I recall correctly but the overall taste was sadly very one dimensional. Yes they have won quite a few awards and medals but I'd like to actually taste what they are going up against or how many other wines are actually competing. Again, no offense, I am sure there are quite a few other wineries that could have that many awards too if they were busy entering into contests
