I am an 84 year old post op resident at the Citadel nursing facility in Wilmette, Illinois. I have been so for the past 6 weeks. I am recuperating from a 6 hour aortic repair surgery. I will soon be leaving the facility and want to take this opportunity to record my experience here since it was so exceptional, pleasant and rewarding.
I have pior post op nursing home experience and that provides a foundation for my positive overview of my Citadel stay. Citadel personnel – from front desk to nurses to the attending physician are professional, attentive and cordial. The PT instructors

If you care about your loved ones please do not send them here. Negligent.. inattentive and rude nurses. My mother was there for rehab and I believe they sped up her death.. the staff and management here will arrange fancy care plan meetings with you and make everything sound so lovely but execute none of what they say they are going to do. They would bring my mom food and offer her a few bites and then just take it away. We had to stay there to make sure she ate. They would leave her in her own feces and urine for hours even after we would call them to change her. She was in extreme pain for days

I am giving Citadel Wilmette 1 star due to their accounting office. I prepaid my dad's stay at Citadel. He passed away. I am due a refund of his unused stay. Every step of the way I've had to contact Citadel regarding refunding the unused portion. It is almost 8 weeks since my dad passed away and I have still not received the refund.

My experience here was SCARY. Understaffed. Some cruel staff members, some totally incompetent and uncaring nurses (which negates some nurses and aides that are terrific ). Medication given by some nurses at random times, or not at all. Patients sitting in feces and urine for extended periods of time. Dementia patients sitting in wheel chairs in an unattended dining room. One fell out of his chair and wound up in the hospital. Nursing administrator denies any problems exists if you report one, rather than correct the situation. Tiny, cramped physical therapy area. Do not send a loved

We are grateful for Citadel. The place is very clean, management and administration is very polite and professional, and the nurses and CNAs are friendly and competent. Our family member requested for female staff only and the Director of Nursing, Dennise, was very patient and responsive to this request. Immediately the next day after the request, she had a resolution in place. It is very scary to put your family member's care in the hands of other people. The staff of Citadel has given us peace that our loved one was safe and was being taken cared of. I highly recommend this place. Thank you!

Hands down BEST facility, care and staff in Illinois!
When it came to long term care, for my now 96 year old Mother (who is also my best friend), there was not even a question as to what the choice would be. From our side and from hers. Citadel of Wilmette!!!
We were referred to Citadel by Evanston Hospital and her primary physician for rehab following a very serious fall last year at 95 for which she was hospitalized. The rehab and the staff at Citadel is beyond anything one could imagine. Personal, lovely, exceptional in their knowledge and care. She was successfully rehabbed and we brought

HORRIFYING!!! NEGLIGENT!!! Three of the most terrifying days and nights of my life!!!
I was sent here to recover from back surgery and receive IV antibiotics after catching a staff infection in the hospital. I am not elderly by any means, and I have all of my cognitive faculties!
Upon arrival I was struck with concern when we got past the lobby and onto the floor. The difference was night and day. It was dark and dreary and smelled 'funky'. My son was scared and said it looked like Arkham Asylum (from the Batman comics).
The room was worse. Two patients assigned to a room

I would HIGHLY recommend the Citadel on Poplar in Wilmette. My 95 year old mom just left there a few weeks ago after convalescing for 3 weeks from pneumonia. The nurses, CNAs and all other staff are friendly and kind and all around excellent - VERY responsive and helpful and the PT and OT therapists were great - mom is stronger than she has ever been in recent memory. Again - I highly recommend them! You can tell them I recommended them too - as I told them I would!

I recently stayed at The Citadel after my cardiac surgery in February and highly recommend to anyone who is looking for rehab. Nancy was my therapist and was so patient with me, and I can be a tough one! The nurses (Allison and Dawn were amazing!) and help (Rob, William and Yanek?) went above and beyond and always made me feel like the only patient on the unit. Never had to wait long for someone to come and help. I am a big food critic and that’s where I get the 4/5 stars. The nursing care and therapy definitely don’t deserve anything less than a 5 but the food wasn’t to my liking. I like

My mother had two recent, sheet-term stays at Citadel for broken hips. Citadel was recommended by our doctor and we are very grateful. Both my mother and our family were very pleased with the level of care she received. Upon arriving at Citadel, a group meeting was scheduled to discuss her care plan was arranged with the head of every department. Every aspect of her care was discussed at once which I found to be an effective part her care.
My mother broke one hip and then fell and broke the other four weeks later by reaching too far for a light switch. Both times she was rehabbed quickly

My mother spent the last 5 months of her life at The Citadel and we are so grateful and thankful that a facility exists like this on the North Shore.
The staff, from the admissions director to all the nurses were beyond excellent and so very kind and caring.
Upon my mothers passing, the compassion and comfort expressed by the staff went beyond the expected and made a difficult transition so much easier. We are so thankful to all of them.

Manor Care in Wilmette has been an absolute blessing for my Mother and myself. I would HIGHLY recommend this home to anyone looking for a qualitative experience where they will be cared for and treated with dignity and respect.
A bit of background - my mother has a list of illnesses, all working against her. She had breast cancer twice, a heart attack, and most recently, was diagnosed with Huntington's Disease, which is a highly disabling movement disorder. She has had two hip replacements in the past (one on each hip) because of a birth defect. Before her initial replacements in 1998 and

I write as the daughter of an Alzheimer's resident, not a short-term physical re-hab patient.
Don't be fooled by the slightly dated, care-worn appearance of this facility. That's not what really matters. Yes, of course it is clean. But what matters is the expertise of the staff and their compassionate treatment of the residents. Also, this is a relatively small facility, so the staff-to-resident ratio is very good. An unexpected bonus is that the residents feel a sense of community amongst themselves. All of this creates a very supportive environment for people whose faculties are diminishing

I cannot say enough good things about this place! My grandpa had a stroke back in September, very severe. We was in the ICU for a month, then at another long term care facility, which was horrible. Then he was moved to Manor Care in Wilmette. At the time, he was still not breathing, eating or walking on his own. He was originally on the second floor, and most nurses there took excellent care of him (most, not all). After a month, he was moved to first floor, and it got even better.
First of all, he was offered a private room, which was incredible, considering that he only has public aid, and all

My family considered moving my wife's uncle (who is currently at Cambridge Nursing and Rehab which has a two-star rating) to this facility which has a four-star rating. After meeting with the administrator, we were told that the director of nursing said the level of care is no better than at Cambridge. I admire their honesty; I gave them two stars based on their own assessment. ManorCare is considerably more expensive - so we are happy to be paying far less for the same level of care.
