Located in downtown Newark, New Jersey, Hobby's Delicatessen and Restaurant has been run by the Brummer family since 1962. An old-fashioned Jewish delicatessen, Hobby's still pickles its own legendary corned beef in fifty-gallon stainless steel vats, and its potato pancakes are a must-have. Soups are hearty and, of course, homemade.
But Hobby's is much more than a place to enjoy hard-to-find top-quality Eastern-European delicacies - Hobby's offers a wonderful line of freshly-made salads, fresh fruits, and daily specials such as gazpacho, fresh salmon, chicken fajita wraps and other, more modern fare. Hobby's is also the proud sponsor of Operation Salami Drop, an effort to send salamis to American soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

My husband and I grew up in Newark NJ and regularly ate at Hobby's. Sandwiches, especially Pastrami are DELICIOUS.
We moved to Virginia about thirty years ago.
Whenever we came to Newark, stopping by Hobby's for two Pastrami sandwiches was a MUST do.
On Saturday October 23, 2021 coming from New Haven CT, we made it our business to go to by Hobby's to get our sandwiches. Hobby's was closed👁️👁️😯😢.
Standing outside, Hobby's looked as if it was closed down. A gentleman passing by said, "Hobby's isn't open anymore",😱. Is that the truth????

Got a Turkey / Pastrami on J. Rye with a cup of the Split pea soup, the order came with a great bunch of pickles. The vibes are true and authentic, it feels like a very none assuming kind of place ... and that's right, why would you assume !? So lets talk about the sandwich, pretty good... pretty, pretty, pretty good . And what about the Split pea, also pretty good...pretty, pretty, pretty good too. I just gobbled the stuff up...yum um um um um yum ! Pretty good. Everyone is friendly, good chats, but not pushy about it, like some places that try a bit to hard. What can I say, these are real

Only been here twice but this is one of the best Jewish Deli's in New Jersey , they have been around for 100 years and there's a reason they brine and marinate steaks on premises and even provide steak chops to nearby steakhouses , owner Dave I believe.. great guy and personable , and hands down the best pastrami I think I've ever had I had it yesterday and can still taste it , try the number 5 corned beef and pastrami on rye with coleslaw and Russian dressing , just amazing, believe me.

Came after a Seton Hall game with my family. This is an old school deli, nothing has been updated and the atmosphere and decor gets a 0. Do not come here to be wowed by your surroundings. The tables are in a large school lunch cafeteria type like room but there is waitress service and you do NOT seat yourself either. They were slammed when we were there so I guess I can overlook the very slow service. It took almost 15 minutes just to get some menus.
Food items ordered:
mushroom barely soup - this was very yummy and probably my favorite item ordered.
Classic Reuben - huge portion, easily shared

The last time I visited Hobby's was several years ago, and I was blown away. The flavor of the pastrami and the whole experience was burned into my memory as the definition what a great deli should be. At least that's how I remember it. Sadly, today it didn't live up to those memories. What I remember as being fantastic is now just "ok" (maybe a little better than ok, but not by much). My father and I both ordered the same thing: hot pastrami on rye, with coleslaw. We shared an order of onion rings. When it all arrived at the table it looked good, and to be fair it was

How about I just start with I LOVE HOBBY'S. If you love great sandwiches, BIG great sandwiches and a simple, old-school deli then Hobby's is your place.
My co-workers and I come here when we need to get out for lunch and have a great sammich. My personal recommendation is the corned beef and pastrami with cheese Russian dressing and coleslaw on rye...by far my favorite. I also recommend the matzoh ball soup-it's the best in Newark.
Even if you don't have room you really need to finish lunch off with one of their giant cookies. Both the which chocolate macadamia nut and the

Very family oriented!!! The food was worth it with the quality. Do expect to spend a few dollars here but the food was great quality and tasty. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak (Newark style) with onions and peppers and asked for fries on the side! Food was filling! I also revived a free cookie of my choice with the yelp check in! Cookies are huge! So thanks to yelp for that offer! Staff is friendly! Would be going back again! Thank you!

This place won't strike you as a restaurant that serves fine or gourmet food. But OMG, they got the most awesome pastrami sandwich ever. Its pastrami sandwich (#5 on the menu) had the size of the sandwich from the "Carnegie Deli" from the days by-gone but the taste was definitely better. My sandwich meat was was juicy and melted in my mouth. The coleslaw in the sandwich was a perfect complement to the meat. The bread was fresh. I was there for lunch and I was too full for dinner around 8pm.
Both Mike and Mark, the brothers/owners, stopped by and they were genuinely nice. The whole

It was a rainy day and we wanted to try someplace new. Hobby's isn't exactly new, it's been there forever but we hadn't been there. The deli is a favorite of the legal community but I never seemed to find the time to stop in when I was practicing.
No trouble finding the place. Lots of parking lots nearby. The owner welcomed us as we entered, a nice touch.
So what did we have? A roast beef sandwich on rye and potato pancakes for me. Two dogs and fries for my son. Dr. Browns cream soda. A to go order for my wife of Turkey on rye with russian and cole slaw. Food was brought out

This is an old-school delicatessen worthy of a five-star review. First off, the owner greets each guest like family, and takes the time to visit with diners and ensure you are enjoying your meal. And as for the food, it's just simply amazing comfort food. I had the #5 sandwich (corned beef, pastrami, coleslaw and Russian dressing) and every bite was spectacular--I absolutely understand why it's billed as "the one that made us famous"!!! The Manhattan clam chowder was also just what I needed on this bitter cold 3 degree polar vortex day in Newark. I am reinvigorated and

I had an event nearby, so luckily this came up when I looked for nearby restaurants, but it is in a Newark area that doesn't have a lot of easy parking.
In front is a deli counter to get your meat by the pound to go and then off to the side is a dining room. There's a lot of Devils merchandise, but the wood paneling gives off a very "we decorated in the 70s and stuck with it vibe. But how's the food?
My boss raved about the Reuben, so I had no choice but to try it. It's open faced and has enough Swiss and Russian dressing to flavor up the pastrami without overwhelming

Jewish Deli Awesomeness!
.
This Jewish Deli is still thriving in Newark NJ and the food is sooooo goood!!!!
When you go here you feel like you are going back in time and I love it. You walk in and see the counter filled of delicious pastries and treat and I just wanted to buy every single one of them.
.
I went with a big group and we sat down at a big table and i split a sandwich with my buddy. So I had half a sandwich of pastrami and a half of corned beef. They were both unreal as I write this I want another one right now. Their meats have a bit of a Smokey flavor and are not greasy at all so

Holy cow! What an awesome experience. We had friendly service, great food, and the Devils atmosphere is great! Lots of lovely little holes everywhere if you're paying attention. I highly recommend the Reuben "sliders," though each one is really the size of a whole sandwich. It lets you taste the traditional, Chico, and brisket Reubens, with is good because I still can't choose. We'll definitely be back.

Incredible food and huge portions at Hobby’s. This old-school family deli has an enormous menu, which left us planning our next trip back. One of the owners, Michael, chatted with us for a while during our meal, which added even more to the comfortable, welcoming, family vibe. The potato pancakes were better than any I’d had before, and the matzah ball soup was picture-worthy. There were several vegetarian and vegan options too, including a Mediterranean grilled vegetable platter with divine homemade hummus. Must try!

The food was so delicious! We had read about this place and it was rated #1, but you know you can't always believe what you read. I would definitely have to agree with that statement. When we arrived we were greeted right away by who appeared to be the owner and he also made sure we were doing ok once we got our food. Now that's what I call great service! The price was fair for the amount of food you get. We for there at around 11:30am for lunch and wow, it was so filling and much more. I ordered the corned beef and pastrami sandwich, which they are known for. There was so much meat in that sandwich

I must say this place got some good food. Don't get discouraged when looking at the front of the restaurant because it does look old and runned down even when you walk in. It's like they're saying "hey we've been here for years, why change our look...our food is what matters, so give us a chance" and YOU KNOW WHAT, my friend and I did and I was very satisfied and happy.
My friend and I ordered a caesar salad with pan seared salmon and OMG it was delicious and 1 order was able to feed 2. We ordered a pasta salad and baked mac n cheese on the side 2. Kinda wish
