Services
In 1886, Harry Stout and William Bristor established Harry Stout & company, a boot and shoe store at 318 Massachusetts Avenue in Indianapolis. In a time of hand-cobbled shoes, an off-the-shelf shoe store was a new concept. Stout's father, Benjamin, who died is 1875, ran a grocery and dry goods business.

There was a wide variety of shoes to choose from. Moreover, the staff was very knowledgeable and helpful and definitely helped me make the right selection! I'm very glad I checked out this shoe store instead of buying shoes online like I was initially considering!!

Cool place love the history of it, very helpful salesman, there was a lot of people in there I was surprised he was able to help so many people at one time. They should give that man a raise or hire him an assistant, what a pro.

Went here to get a new pair of nonslip work shoes, found what I was looking for. The manager herself helped me find what I was looking for, and even shipped the shoes from another store to this location for an easier pickup on my end. A little bit of a steep markup but I'd rather shop locally than from a giant chain, especially because of the post-lock down struggle these businesses are in.

Great place to buy footwear. Wife bought 3 pair that she loved, said they were very comfortable. She has one other in mind, and I had 2. Definitely going back.

The service here is great. My son lives downtown, went here for shoes and had excellent service. The woman measured his foot also. So I went there for running shoes. I had the same sales person. She was pleasant, patient and definitely knew her merchandise. I am totally pleased with my purchase.

All shoe store are not created equal!

I have always been a Target show shopper or if I am feeling a little spendy I will go to DSW. The thing is, is that I have pretty large feet for a woman and they are wide :/. So usually I squeeze my foot into something that doesn't really fit and isn't comfortable, wear it a few times and then get rid of them.

When I decided to buy hiking boots I knew I couldn't play the same shoe game I played in the past. I needed a pair of shoes that fit well!

I've walked past Stout's plenty of times while on Mass ave and I've admired the

You know those old time places that know their business and customer service? Yeah I love those places too. Stout's is one of those locations here in Indianapolis. I have a really wide and odd footbed and finding shoes is always hard for me. Luckily Stouts sells my favorite tennis shoes: Brooks. I called ahead and my shoes were held and waiting for me. On arrival I was greeted by Sara who took great care listening to what I was looking for. She got my Brooks and found ideal house shoes. Thanks for staying open and selling great shoes in all sizes in the new covid world.

Love this store and location! Last visit the staff was super helpful when fitting my husband for his high arches. So thankful we have the ability to still shop stores like this- no way I can purchase shoes online without returning them over and over ..... because the high arch is a very specific fit.
I appreciate all of you @stouts! Comfortable shoes make for a happy life....AND a happy wife!

I have been shopping at Stout's for years. Not only does one step back in time into the oldest shoe store in America but you also experience great service and great selection. The staff has always been friendly and very helpful. And yes it is still owned by the same family since opening in 1886. You should really try to experience a visit to Stout's for yourself. I think you'll find it to be the perfect fit for your footwear needs.

I've bought a lot of shoes here. The quality of employee knowledge has declined tremendously. I had to return 3 times to get the right size shoes. First employee measured my feet and said I needed an 11 1/2. I usually wear 10 1/2. Tried them on and was walking out of them. Then, she ordered me a size 11 from another store. Didn't fit. Arrived after a few days. Finally ordered a 10 1/2 from another store. Went in and tried them on. All good until check out. Employee couldn't figure out how to credit other shoes. Wow, what an ordeal. I like their selection of shoes...Ecco, Clark

This is my first time to this particular Stout's. I did know it's one of the oldest shoes stores in the nation. 133 years old!! When you walk in those doors you're transported back in time. I loved the checker board floors. It's such a unique store that you just don't see often anymore. I love supporting an old establishment like this. Years ago they invented a wire basket and pulley system called the Baldwin Flyer system. Years ago it was used to send the shoes and money up to the mezzanine office where the shoes were wrapped and the change was made. Then the wrapped shoes

When I shop for shoes, I want to go somewhere I can try on shoes quickly (preferably by pulling the sizes myself) and not be hounded by a salesperson during the process. At Stout's, the salesperson tries to keep you in their store for a long time. They want to measure your foot, they want you to try on shoes that they recommend in addition to the ones that you want, and they push you to try on additional insoles that you can buy.

Some people might like this type of service and think that it's a nice personal touch. Me, I just want to get in and out of a store as soon as possible, and

I am drawn to Stout's for three key reasons:

1.) History: it is one of America's oldest shoe stores

2.) They're local and located in a hyper-local location

3.) Very practical selection of active and formal shoes for those of us who try to balance "looking nice" and not standing in pain. Think: Birkenstock, Merrell, etc.

3.1) They have a pet parrot to keep things interesting.

I love the conveyor belts, wooden infrastructure, and window displays that add to the charm of the experience. It makes me think of an old time-y shoe shop that you would find in a movie from the

One of the oldest shoe stores in Indiana with an emphasis on customer satisfaction. I have been having foot problems and I need a wider shoe just in the toes. I must have tried on 15 pairs of shoes and my salesman opened every box and helped me put on each pair with his shoe horn. They know shoes here and my next pair will be from here too.

Everyone needs shoes, even those who prefer to go barefoot. It's a matter of health code at the very least. At their best, shoes will make your feet look feel look and feel their very best. These days, it is easier and (usually) less expensive to buy shoes from chain retailers like The Finish Line or on the Internet at Zappos.com. That's all fine and dandy for some, but if you're looking to purchase quality shoes with the perfect fit, nothing beats visiting a real shoe store. Fortunately, for those of us in Indianapolis, we have Stouts.
