In addition to sourcing top quality foods, we are committed to minimizing our impact on the environment through operational systems such as composting, recycling, and using 100% green power. The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit organization committed to preserving and building sources of non-GMO products, and educating consumers.

The Berkeley Natural Grocery is the first of our three locations, and is where the Non-GMO Project began. In 1988 we opened The El Cerrito Natural Grocery, and in 2014, The Natural Grocery Prepared Food Annex. A large selection of Health and Wellness products and Supplements chosen in accordance with our high standards.
Our produce departments are 100% organic! Taste the difference organic makes. We invite you to sample our entirely organic fruits and vegetables while shopping - just ask one of the Produce Clerks tending our selection. Tim, our Buyer (and a produce monger for more than a decade), thoughtfully and persistently procures delicious, unique, locally grown and mindfully imported produce.
Storage: Look for fruit that are unblemished and are slightly firm when you purchase them, unless you plan to eat them right away. They also smell fragrant. You can allow pears to ripen by leaving out at room temperature, uncovered, for a day or two; or you can stall the fruit's ripening by keeping it in the refrigerator.
The Annex is a lively space for shopping, dining and relaxing. As the newest part of The Natural Grocery Company, the values are the same: a passion for vibrant community, healthy organic food and respect for the planet. Join us for fresh, delicious prepared foods made with the same organic ingredients we sell in our stores.

Does the management here not pay a living wage to their cashiers? Or is the manager horrible or something? There has to be *some* reason that the cashiers at the grocery (not the annex) are SO cold and unfriendly. (This is only in reference to the cashiers at the grocery store — the folks at the butcher counter, and everyone at the annex, is friendly).
The cashiers are SO cold that every time I visit, I vow never to go back. But it’s a long drive to the next place that sells pastured meat (Magnani’s in Berkeley. Giovanni’s, if you only had a butcher counter!, I would never leave El Cerrito

Great selection in the original Grocery store all the good ORGANIC basics, great bulk section etc.. The added value/ prepared food building next door is another story, it's for those with Six figure incomes or for an occasional treat but at $350 for a quiche I was left with my jaw dropped...then the price was corrected to $35 still a bit pricy;-) for an 8" pie and the veggie model just wasn't that special- wouldn't buy it again. The carrot cake loaf slice was also a bit dry and was not very flavorful either for $5. I would eat a just deserts carrot cake over it any day at a fraction of the cost

Im not sure if theft is on the tise due to the state of the world. However my experience today was very uncomfortable. Ive shopped here frequently pre pandemic and never felt uncomfortable. Two employees were watching me closely. As though they thought i was shoplifting or something. I just left my basket and left. As i walked out one of the employees was watching me. Im a hard working tax paying citizen. I wont be spending my post tax dollars here anymore…

Fairly typical collection of overpriced organics and luxury items -- many of the products are nice, but can be found for less $$ elsewhere. Difficult to negotiate aisles with barely passing space and that feeling of always being in someone's way, especially around the cold cases. If the staff attitude were a color, it would be taupe...not rude, but not friendly either, and definitely not fun. Go to Berkeley Bowl instead.

Well, I quite liked this place! (5/5 green stars)
I can definitely see how business owners become frustrated (enraged, even) by certain online reviews. El Cerrito Natural Grocery seems to receive more than its fair share of unreasonably whingey reviews. Wah, there are nuts in some pastries! Wah, there’s gluten in the thing I bought without looking at the ingredients list! Wah, regular parkers park in the electric car spot! If there’s a regular car parked at the charging station you would think it’s more reasonable to blame that driver rather than give the store one star.
Anyhoo, I dropped
