Nourishing our West Oakland neighborhood with healthy food, wellness resources, and collective ownership. We intend to strengthen and diversify our local economy. Our worker-owned grocery store sources from local entrepreneurs and farmers in California with a focus on black and brown farmers and food makers.
In the store, you'll find fresh, pesticide-free produce, high-quality meats, hormone-free eggs and dairy, local bread and a growing sundries department with natural and high-quality locally-made beauty and wellness products. Shop the Coop! Worker Cooperatives (Co-ops) are principled, values-driven businesses with workers' lives and community benefits at the core of our existence.

Services
Unlike conventional supermarkets and grocery stores, Mandela is operated, centrally governed, and democratically controlled by our worker-owners. Our structure and operations are guided by cooperative principles and a strong community centered mission. We prioritize sourcing from local farmers and food purveyors.
As participants in The California Nutrition Incentive Program we offer 50% OFF all California Grown fruits and vegetables to customers paying with SNAP/EBT. The California Nutrition Incentive Program (CNIP) aims to increase the amount of fresh local produce people with SNAP/EBT purchase. Our goal, as a mission-driven co-op, is to remind our neighbors of the cultural traditions of cooking and eating meals together as a family.
Ujamaa, A Co-op Culture Story is a mini branded documentary created to inspire and encourage young people around the country to build cooperative businesses and spark economic growth in their communities. This is the trailer. If you shop the Co-op you've probably already given to the Karma Jar. The balancing action of the Karma Jar allows us to pay it forward, helping those in need buy groceries.
At the Co-op, workers collectively play active and meaningful roles that drive the success of the store. Workers directly contribute to and benefit from continuous learning and improved operations of the business. Jobs at Mandela Grocery are long-term. We offer a unique hiring process, extensive orientation, ongoing grocery specific skills training and Cooperative education.

I love the Mandela grocery co-op! It’s a small store with a big variety of grocery items including high quality meat and produce. Prices are generally pretty reasonable, it’s worker-owned and all the staff members are lovely, and it’s an amazing resource in a neighborhood without many grocery options.

Love supporting our local neighborhood businesses! I will say some days the produce isn’t as great as others but it’s just fine if you’re cooking the same day. They have an impressive selection for being in the middle of a food desert. Some days the staff is friendlier then other days but overall better than any corporate grocery.

They have a decent selection compared to the size of the store. They recently rearranged the items, it made better use of the space. They give discounts to local customers. They often give away gift cards. It's the ONLY grocery store in W. Oakland.!! All of the service providers are very polite, always offering their assistance. A lot of the larger grocery stores make it hard to even get help, unless you look for a clerk & ask. Prices maybe a smidge higher, but it's a smaller more personal experience. The clerks may not know your name, but they can usually recognize your face.
