I consulted with Hoover Krepelka regarding various family law issues which are of course personal. Anyone who ever has to speak to a family law attorney knows how tough it is and can feel lost. From the very beginning, Hoover Krepelka was amazing each step of the way. They are expensive but I truly believe you get what you pay for. Do not retain some low cost hack and think you will get anything worth it.

Initially I would have given 5 stars. However after a bait and switch on a senior counsel for a junior mid-case, and the junior botched up on many details of the case (e.g. silly stuff got my name wrong, my kids name wrong, embarrassing), I had to let them go. The junior cost about 90% of the senior but had about 1/3 the value. Very expensive firm, especially considering I had to re-brief the new counsel on matters relating to the case, for a staffing change at their discetion. If you have a more senior counsel from them, keep them assigned, and can afford it, this is a good "large firm."

Jim is beyond awesome and is truly a pioneer in the family law space. Just recently I referred him to my sister, who is going through a divorce and was in urgent need for an attorney. Hoover and Krepelka may be one of the biggest family law firms in San Jose, but what they have in quantity they definitely lack in quality. Most of their attorneys are young kids jist out of school barely knowing anything about family law.
I was unfortunate to have been given Ms. Karlina Paredes. Coming off as an extremely confident and wanna be hot shot attorney, her and the owner James Hoover convinced me that she was one of his best according to her stellar Yelp reviews.
For the entire time I was with her, she didn't do anything that was aggressive nor advantageous for my case. In fact

A couple of months ago my ex reached out to me stating she was planning on drawing on my military pension. We have been divorced since Sep 2007 and the written divorce agreement was that we would keep 100% of all pensions received. I was very concerned about my ex's inquiry about my military pension. My experience with this firm started off great. They helped me get a bifurcation divorce. They were professional but pricey.
Then the bogus billing started. They would switch the attorney on me sending me an email to inform me and bill me for the email. They would contact me for no reason and bill me and then the new attorney would have to get up to speed and bill me for that.
This was all happening while I was in arbitration and had instructed them that I would contact them if needed.

I have been using Hoover Krepelka for years. Jim Hoover and Travis Krepelka handle custody, divorce and all types of Family Law issues. I would not hesitate to use them again or refer them to friends and family. I hired Karlina at a crucial time during divorce and domestic violence proceedings against my ex. Karlina eloquently handled multiple chaotic scenarios to ensure my protection. I couldn't be happier with my experience with Jim Hoover and his team. He's incredibly knowledgeable, citing the specific relevant statutes and giving no-nonsense and specific answers to questions, like "if you took that to court, you'd have a 75% chance of winning."

Jim Hoover will promise you the moon. I was referred to him. He said that 2 attorneys are assigned to each case so I got him and a second one. He said the second one would be taking 2/3 of the case and he 1/3. This was practically a full out lie. I never got a single email or phone call from him. And when the 3 of us met it was obvious he had just been updated!
Some issues came up and I ended up leaving the firm (after many months of them very easily taking my money with their exorbitant rates) but with the understanding that these were issues out of my control and I could return to HooverKrepelka

I was referred to Karlina when I was looking for an attorney to help my sister. She was able to meet with her quickly and gave her great tips on how to get out of ha bad marriage. Later when my mother in law needed help I again referred her to Karlina and the firm. She retained and helped in a difficult time. In 2002, I consulted and retained Robert Hoover for my divorce. To me Robert felt more like a loving father figure than my lawyer. Since November I've been working with Julia Bressman and Jim Hoover on my divorce, custody issues and a restraining order. My day to day contact was with Julia Bressman and she is an absolute rockstar. I read another review and it said "Julia fought fearlessly for what was right..." and I couldn't agree more.
