Services
The Schefkind Eye Care team consists of ophthalmologists Mark Schefkind, M.D and Edward Chay, M.D. We are also assisted by certified ophthalmic technicians and friendly, professional administrative staff. The team has worked together for years. Each member was selected for their experience, skill, and dedication to serving you.
Mark Schefkind, M.D. is an Ophthalmologist & Cataract Surgeon who has provided medical, laser & surgical eye care to the Mt. Vernon, Springfield & Alexandria communities of Fairfax County, VA since 1989.

Dr. Schefkind earned his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society, followed by a residency in Ophthalmology at the Scheie Eye Institute of the University of Pennsylvania.
Routine eye exams for eye health and vision correction are provided by our team of ophthalmologists and staff at Schefkind Eye Care. Regular eye exams for adults and especially seniors are the best way to prevent eye health problems such as age related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic eye problems from leading to vision loss.
Having clear vision and seeing "normally" requires that light be able to pass through the optical structures of your eyes and properly focus on the retina.

The two primary structures that are responsible for refracting, or bending light so that it can focus on the retina, are the cornea, which is the outermost clear curved "lens" that is visible when looking at your eye from a side view and the crystalline lens, which is located behind the colored part of the eye, or the iris, and is not directly visible.
Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve that is most often associated with a high pressure inside the eye-Intraocular Pressure (IOP)-that damages the nerve and causes progressive loss of vision. In the United States there are more than three million people with glaucoma. The most common form, Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG) begins without any symptoms or obvious loss of vision.

Amazing! Dr. Schefkind is so kind and attentive. He saw me on an emergency basis and made me feel super comfortable. He listened to me and remembered our conversation from the first time he saw me. The woman that helped me at the front desk was wonderful!

While the doctors here are technically excellent, the practice is a mess. Poorly managed and chaotic. Always a long wait at appointment time. Surly, bossy and unpleasant woman who schedules surgeries. Lack of coordination across the team. Billing is confusing. I feel badly writing this as I have tried to stick with them through a series of mis-steps, and I think most of them mean well, but something here is just off. Getting eye care shouldn't raise your blood pressure. There are other, less stressful options.

I was very impressed with Dr. Chay and his staff. My mother has dementia They spoke in terms that she could understand, and were very patient, kind, and caring.
I would have given them five stars, but his assistant, Loraine was not so kind. I tried to explain to her a problem we were having with medication. She cut me off and was very condescending. It was very embarrassing and frustrating. The next visit I told her how I and my mother felt about the previous appointment, her response was"yep". Disappointed that we had this experience. Overall, Dr. Chay is excellent.

I had cataracts removed from both my right and left eyes. I opted to have the laser surgery for both. Both procedures went smoothly without any problems either during the surgery or after. Dr Edward Chay was my surgeon and I would recommend him faithfully. The Schefkind practice is efficiently ran and I had a very satisfying experience with all concerned. I am so happy with the result and I am so very glad I had this procedure. Being able to see like I can now is something I could not have imagined before. Thank you to Schefkind for making this experience so positive.

In 2017, I had a torn retina and a year later I couldn't see a thing out of my left eye. I was referred to Dr. Chay and he performed Cataract surgery a couple of months later. The experience that I had was amazing. I was able to see clearly within a day. Dr. Chay and the staff was warm, attentive and professional. Lastly, Anna was also a jewel.....
A huge thank you to Schefkind Eye Care.

Very positive and pleasant atmosphere. Although it took awhile for one eye to adjust they are both fine.
Having the laser cataract surgery was very fast and no real side effects.
I am very pleased with both doctors.

I have been a patient of Dr. Schefkind for 6+ years...always considerate of my time and his office runs efficiently. I have had two cataract surgeries, one with the laser and everything went smoothly - the different surgery options were presented clearly. Highly recommend.
