Services
At Penn Audiology, Hearing and Balance Professionals, you will enjoy a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We strive to promote our "patient centered" philosophy by utilizing a "treat the whole person" approach. We offer personalized and continued care for children and adults with an array of services including comprehensive hearing healthcare, diagnostics and treatment of vestibular disorders and dysfunction, and preventative care.
Serving the entirety of the lifespan from childhood to elder life, we also consider a range of hearing needs from everyday life to occupational and specialized listening. In addition to treating hearing conditions, we also help prevent future hearing loss through customized protection. The first step on the path to comfortable and accurate hearing is to have it tested.
Each person's experience of hearing loss is different, but certain commonalities can help us understand our experiences of hearing impairment. In the simplest terms, hearing loss is a limitation on a person's ability to connect sensory stimuli-sounds-with the cognitive perception of that sound. Although the same sound waves are all around us, we have trouble turning those patterns of air pressure into recognizable units understood in the mind.
Ear anatomy is better understood than the complex inner workings of the brain while it processes the web of sonic stimuli coming from the ear. More seems to be known about technical aspects of neural signal processing than how we derive complex meanings from these impulses.
One way that scientists have advanced their knowledge of the connection between the ear and the brain is to study the relationship between hearing loss and cognitive disorders, such as dementia.Dementia has been linked to hearing loss in a number of clinical studies. A study by Dr. Frank Lin at Johns Hopkins University found that brain tissue loss was accelerated in those who had suffered from hearing loss.

An estimated 38 million people have a significant hearing loss and an estimated 26 million people in the United States have diabetes.' According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), there is a link between diabetes and hearing loss. In fact, it is about twice as common in adults with diabetes compared to those who do not have the condition.
