BlueSkies is committed to providing high-quality support to children and their families, ensuring that parents can focus on their jobs knowing that their children are experiencing healthy days of balanced play, nurturing, and learning. BlueSkies, a private, nonprofit 501(c)3 program founded in 1983, is the only NAEYC-accredited childcare center in Oakland.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children has been a national program for the accreditation of Early Education programs for 30 years. There is a direct correlation between high-quality early learning and children's positive long-term outcomes in life, including increased educational attainment, healthier lifestyles, and more successful careers.
Services
BlueSkies for Children has always been shaped by the parents who help to create a community that serves both children and parents. BlueSkies parents organize fundraising events and organize educational, social, and support services for families. Parents are often the best support for other parents at BlueSkies; getting involved in the community creates those connections.
We serve about 85 children from 2 months to 5 years of age in six classrooms, from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. Our Children's Programs are intentionally inclusive of all families. BlueSkies for Children provides a unique, high-quality program that serves both working parents and supports the growth of children through play.
Children in the Ellen Sherwood Nursery School range in age from 2 -5 years old. The Nursery School contains three distinctly different classrooms, the Playroom, Homeroom, and Schoolroom, for the different age groups.

The three years of preschool are filled with experiences and individualized coaching that helps children learn first who they are as individuals, then how to be a friend and have a friend, and finally how to enjoy being a member of a group-all key requirements for success in elementary school.
BlueSkies welcomes children and families from all social, economic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds and with a variety of special needs.

The individualized, developmental approach to learning in the Children's Program is appropriate and supportive to many children with special needs, though some children with special needs require a different environment, ratio, and teaching style (particularly those who are overwhelmed by large, busy, socially-focused groups of children).
Education and support for the teachers who are providing these services to children and families. The quality of a child's experience in an early childhood setting depends entirely on the ability of the teacher to provide age-appropriate experiences within the context of an authentic, caring, and compassionate relationship.

This place takes all the parking in the neighborhood and tows cars first in the morning. This is a low income neighborhood none of us can afford to send our kids here. These people do nothing for the community just take all our parking and tow our cars when we park in theirs.

They are simply better than the other options. All of their decisions are deliberate and thoughtful. The staff is highly trained. I am grateful to have found such wonderful people to leave our infant son with. He is thriving there.

Blue Skies for Children is the best day care option we could find for our infant daughter. We were lucky to get in as they have a very high teacher to baby ratio. All the staff is highly trained and knowledgable. I have learned a lot just from them. About 40% of the day care staff have BAs or MAs.
Each section of Blue Skies is modeled to be age appropriate with toys and surroundings chosen specifically to match the kids development. The infant day care is carpeted and includes low mattresses, small rails for the more advanced babies to pull themselves up by, and rocking chairs for visiting moms
