Original Oyster House
Our fresh selection of seafood is an ideal option for a quick lunch or hearty dinner. Whether you're craving our famous jumbo fish sandwich or award-winning crab cakes - we have the platters, sandwiches, and specials to appease your appetite. The Original Oyster House's history is as rich as the food is fresh.

Established in 1870, the Oyster House is the city's oldest bar and restaurant. Owner Louis J. Grippo purchased the restaurant in 1970, retaining the restaurant's illustrious past while enhancing it's famous menu & features. The Oyster House is a true Pittsburgh tradition, full of history. The food is fresh and delicious, the staff is friendly and I love that this establishment is family owned.
Services
At 149 years old, the Original Oyster House is Pittsburgh's oldest bar and restaurant. Located in the heart of downtown Market Square, near the courts and just across the river from the stadiums, the unique tavern has been designated a historic landmark by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundations.

Friendly table service but served with disposable tableware. Monster Fish Sandwich was literally fish on a cold hoagie, that's it. Fish and chips were very good. Restrooms were ancient. Odd to have two side by side urinals and no toilet.

If you are looking for a friendly welcome and attentive service this is not the place, I was excited to try the food from my brother in law’s recommendation but this was a big disappointment.
The bartender looked annoyed at my arrival, gave a huge grunt with my dirty martini order and then gave me the wrong order to go.
I hesitate to post this as I would hate to post anything negative, but it’s not right.
I have been in customer service my whole life and was really surprised at the complete disregard for my business.

Again I must say this is my absolute favorite restaurant! The owners and staff are absolutely amazing people! The clam chowder is the best I have ever had, and I have tried it anywhere that sells it.
Keep doing what you do, because all the way around, you are simply the best!
Thank you so much!

Called the original oyster house and I think they should honestly change the name. Ordered the oysters and they were hands down the most disgusting excuse for an oyster I have ever had save your money and go to any other restaurant

It's a 150 year old business so you KNOW they know what they're doing. The fish sandwich is outrageous and their honemade tartar sauce is fantastic! I had the onion rings with my sandwich and they were perfect. My husband had the chicken fingers and they were huge and delicious. Of course it's a bar so enjoy a draft along with your meal & get the history from the friendly bar tender!

Rustic bar with decent fish sandwich. We went for lunch and tried the jumbo fish platter. Deep fried fish sandwich accompanied by two sides. Onion rings and fries they were crisp and fresh. We also tried crab cake not the best. Accompanied with their home made sauce that went well with the fish. The crew was attentive and welcoming. The bar had descent options too.

Great atmosphere but lousy service. When we asked the waitress to describe a menu item she almost seemed to go out of her way to make it sound as unappetizing as possible. I then asked for my beer to be served in a real glass as opposed to a plastic cup to which she responded "No, I'm not doing any dishes." In fact she only offered any version of an apology when it came time for us to pay our bill and she realized that a tip was in play. Kind of disappointing to be going to a Pittsburgh institution on our first trip to the city only to receive poor service. Do better Original Oyster House, do better

Cheap, fresh and unique. Fast service - nothing fancy but good foods and beers.

I have been here many times before. Absolutely one of my favorite restaurants ever! Tonight was probably the greatest night of my life. Those involved know what I am talking about. It was a special God moment! The owner and her daughter are the kindest people around

We stopped in here for last Summer during our stay in downtown Pittsburgh. We couldn't have been more happy . Our server was attentive, courteous and friendly. It was hot out so I started with a couple of cold Duquense draft beers to go with our order of shooter oysters, a crab cake sandwich, clam chowder, breaded shrimp and breaded oysters. Now we are ready for the Pirate Game tonight. Let's go Bucs!
