Wheel Werks
Our primary purpose is to make every one of your rides better by connecting you with the best equipment, optimizing your fit, comfort and performance, and keeping your bike finely tuned. Don't think of us as a bike shop, a place where you come to buy things. Think of us as cycling community center, a place you come to find answers, make connections, and enrich the active, outdoors part of your life.

From custom frames to hand-built wheels, together we pick out all the components producing a ride specific to you.
Services
Wheel Werks is the result of owner Bob Olsen's restless, 30-year pursuit of cycling perfection. Beginning as a junior road and criterium racer, his passion has taken him to Europe, Africa and South America, across the United States (as a Race Across America team mechanic) three times, and to scores of camps and clinics where he lectures on bike fitting.
All Wheel Werks services have the goal of safety, optimal functioning, and maximizing bicycle longevity. We believe that dollars invested in periodic service should improve your cycling experience and ultimately save you money, by making your bike and all its components last longer. We encourage you to choose the service your bike needs, and promise we'll deliver that great riding experience you're looking for.
At Wheel Werks, we believe every rider can benefit from having a bike built just for them. Too many riders think of a custom bike just in terms of the frame geometry and reason that a good bike fitting can give them everything a custom build can deliver. This is a basic misunderstanding of the value our custom partners (Seven and Parlee) can deliver.
When leading a rider to their best possible position on the bike, there is no substitute for experience. Technology can help. Training can help. But there is simply no substitute for the long hours of experience that teach a fitter how the human body, in all its shapes and sizes, best sits on a bike.
First, we gathered a range of products we liked, and then asked whether each thing solved a problem our riders really have. We pared down. Then we looked at accessibility. Did we have things that were affordable for the full gamut of riders we serve? We added some things back in. Then we applied our decades experience.

Needed some repair work done and could not have asked for better customer service. Pricing was beyond reasonable as well. Although I didn’t purchase a bike, they sell high-quality brands. Strongly recommend.

Huge shout out to Wheel Werks Custom Bikes in Crystal Lake. After a mega mechanical problem with a wheel at last weekends' Ramble century ride, Bob at Wheel Werks lent his personal bike to one of our group members for one of the 20 mile loops so he could keep working on the damaged wheel. Bob had it fixed by the time the loop was done.

This is way above and beyond SAG support at an organized bike event. If this is their customer service when they are just out volunteering time imagine how they take care of their customers...

Have been working with this shop and Bob for about a year now and have never been disappointed with service. Recently did a bike fit and felt like the experience was thorough and tailored to my cycling goals. Would recommend to anyone who wants a quality experience.

First time visit was great. With the situation given and precautions having to be done it was a good experience. It was nice to see they had items I was looking for which for me is preferred rather than online dealings. They were very helpful and am going back in the future. Recommend people give it a try as well.
Give it 4 stars only cause of limitations had to abide by due to virus situations. Nothing against service.

Great place if you're a hard core rider who spends big $$ on bikes. This place was recommended to me, but I was just looking for a "basic" bike to ride around the area and get some exercise. When they learned I not was going to be spending thousands of dollars their interest and assistance evaporated. I ended up going elsewhere.

This review is long overdue . I purchased a new bike in March this year and right away, while I loved the bike, I had some discomfort with the way I sitting on the bike. I actually started a sciatica which was not very painful but really uncomfortable. I tried, on my own, to move the seat, the stem.... but I would change anything.
I started to google and ask some guys in my group ride where should I go to do a proper bike fitting. In June I finally called Wheel Werks and spoke with Bob and could tell right away that he was passionate and I was going to have a professional service. By the way I

Bob and Josh are some of the best in the game. They are always there to support those avid cyclists. I've bought 2 bikes from Bob and he is always willing to make all the adjustments and work with me. Josh is fantastic as well and knows so much about bikes. Both of them are always willing to take my bike and work on it over all else if I am tight on time before a race because they take care about taking care of people.

Had a bike fitting by Bob and it was a great experience. He made a number of small adjustments on my new bike and they all added up to a great fit. Bob is very knowledgeable and very personable. The fitting was reasonably priced and worth every penny.

I bought a new BMC and Vittoria wheels from Wheels Werks. The whole experience was great! I first liked that they were a Bike shop first. They are not a Tri shop and oh by the way we have bikes (they can talk Tri if you want). I first spoke with Mattias about the different bikes they offered and the pro and cons. The bike I wanted was ordered and came in when they said it would (I really wanted a new bike). They took the time to fit me to the bike. Afterwards Bob worked with me on getting a new set of wheels, Vittoria Quranos, which I totally love (It takes less watts to get the same speed

I had a bike fitting and Bob went far beyond what was expected. It is a much more comfortable ride. He recommended riding for a little while and then do further tweaks if necessary. Also, the left shifter on bike was not operating so he took a look at the issue -- refusing to give up before diagnosing & repairing the problem -- while I was onsite. He actually saved me money because I did not have to buy a new set of cables and have the installed. If you know anything about the Trek Speed Concept, with internal wiring, it is not a simple task. I would not hesitate recommending WW for your biking

Stopped in with a flat tire. It was Monday at 11:20 am and I didn't realize they were closed. Stood at the door and watched the person at the counter stare at me with my rim in hand. I guess business must be good enough to not even answer your door. I realized after I stood there you were closed but you were also rude which tells me you don't need my business. I'll happily move on to the next bike shop.

Needed some new brake pads as the old ones had zero stopping power in the rain. It's so awesome when a shop is so professional and handles everything like you are a pro rider. Got the bike back and thanks to their advice choose the perfect pads and no noise, great stopping power, and old parts returned which I like.

Amazing service and super friendly and knowledgeable staff. Matais, (I hope I spelled your name right!) really took his time to fit me on my wonderful new bike and knew what I needed way before that's what I wanted. Highly recommend this place if you're looking for a high end or tri bike. You won't be disappointed!

I had bought a cheapo bike elsewhere that had a small part wear out prematurely. I stopped in to Wheels Werks see if they had the part, since they're a high end shop they don't normally carry the part I needed but they dug into their salvage bin and found a part that was actually better than my original broken part. They said, "Ehh, how about $2?" Unfortunately I only had a CC on me so asked if that was okay? They said, don't worry about it and let me keep the part.

Do you want to get loyal customers? Because that's how you get loyal customers.

I was experiencing some pain in my knees and arms from an improper fit from another bike shop. Bob at Wheel Werks hooked me up to a computer and measured my pedal force and took a bunch of measurements -- and solved the issues I was having -- and may have even made me a little faster. I'm very impressed. Top notch service.

This is a bike shop that caters to people who are into biking. The selection of bikes are for serious roadies and triathletes. There are limited mountain bikes. Bob, the owner, is a certified fit consultant that uses a positioning system for your body mechanics. My bike, a $2000 Orbea Composite is his almost most basic bike. When you go in, you are treated honestly and you can trust him. It is not worth it to price shop, as he may be $200 more on a $3000 bike, but you will get the service and changeouts of parts that make it more than worthwhile.
