Services
The Redlight Historic Bunk Hotel & Speakeasy is located in downtown Truckee, across from the Greyhound bus, Amtrak train and TART (local bus) stop. By train, check the schedule for Amtrak. Amtrak's California Zephyr passes through Truckee once / day on both eastbound and westbound routes that cross the United States.
Redlight does not guarantee or refund partially or in full in case of weather, road conditions, road closures, health, death, family issues, unfavorable circumstance, natural disaster, acts of 'god', terrorism or otherwise. Reservations made through a 3rd party vendor (OTAs, travel agents, group sales, etc) and not with Redlight have a cancellation policy listed with that vendor which may differ from and supersede this policy.
Note: The private rooms are historic European rooms - they are on average 10' x 10', which is small compared to modern chain lodging establishments. This is the style of when this building was first built. Due to the thin walls of the original construction, we added a white noise maker and cellulose insulation to all bedrooms.
Meet other adventurers at the Redlight and explore what Truckee and North Lake Tahoe have to offer. If you have ideas on what kind of hikes, rides or trips you would like to see, let us know! If you would like to plan a Meetup or outing, the Redlight is the spot. The area is home to many resorts. Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Northstar, Sugar Bowl are just a few to mention that are a bus ride from just across the tracks from the Redlight.
We are primarily looking for reception help which requires use of a Mac and customer service skills. People best suited for the Redlight are open-minded, socially adept, and group-oriented with an interest in mountain environment, small town living, community-centric atmosphere, outdoor activities, sport and arts.

Absolutely horrible, didnt even have the chance to stay, all roads into town were closed all friends in nearby area were snowed in, we try to refund or reschedule our stay and they try charging me 1300 purely for the cancellation because they say I cannot refund or reschedule. Absolutely no help and honestly shocked by the experience. If this was known I would’ve never chosen to stay with them

I have stayed in hostels across the United States. I led bicycle trips for the American Youth Hostels in CA, MA, PA and even France! I love hostels, and this hostel is pretty awesome, and in a very special place, downtown Truckee.
There are a few issues though. It's not that warm in the winter, and the air coming into the bunk room is actually chilly. And the front staff does not have control of the thermostat!
There is a great "movie room" downstairs with lots of movies, which would be an especially great thing for the winter when the nights are longer, but it is closed off to guests now.

My friend was not "vaping a pen." He had a pen in his mouth (an ACTUAL pen) because he was writing your tip and thinking about the amount. It was actually very clearly a pen. I suspect you said that because he's Mexican and for some reason this establishment doesn't hire folks that see other races as their equal. Disgusting.

Good place to rent a room or bunk for cheap. Shared bathrooms and kitchen were clean, decor entertaining, quiet hours observed. This is an old building and the walls are thin and rooms small. Having a kitchen to prepare your own meals helps as most the restaurants in town add up quick. Also there's a sauna upstairs.

I’m quite confident that anyone who complains about this place doesn’t understand what a hostel is, or has never stayed in one. The place clearly advertises it’s a hostel or”bunk style hotel” for those who that doesn’t register. This is the nicest hostel I’ve ever stayed in and I’ve stayed in my fair share of European and Asian hostels. It’s a little on the pricey end but for American prices this is amazing. I’ve paid more for a motel 6 that didn’t provide me a foam mattress and a sound machine. Yes some amenities are shared but that’s because it’s a HOSTEL. I would absolutely

I really hesitate to recommend this Hostel to you. Why? Because it is so cool and if it becomes too popular, then I will have difficulty getting a reservation!
What's not to like about Red light? Literally nothing if you are looking for an inexpensive place to stay in Truckee.
I have stated in three hostels in the last 5 years. This one is by far the best one.
Note: I was a solo client, but they do have private rooms for couples.
If you like meeting and getting to know others, then this is a good option for you. A large kitchen, two larger refrigerators and a video, game room downstairs. Be

I recently moved to the North Lake Tahoe/Truckee area for work. I booked a month at the Redlight because it was close to my new office. Zach and the staff were incredible! They welcomed me warmly and were very attentive to my needs. The ice cream/beer bar was a great place to meet new people. Staying here definitely gave me a good lay of the land and was a great introduction to the local culture.

Stayed in the building next door (pup friendly!) and am happy to report had a very peaceful quiet night. It has a shared kitchen & bathrooms but everyone kept to themselves. Great wifi and the girls at the desk were very helpful. Get you the unicorn vomiting sticker when you visit.

This is a review on their ice cream. I felt like I was going into an ice cream speakeasy as I had to ring a bell to be let in and you couldn't see inside making it feel secretive. Not sure if this is new for the pandemic or has always been this way. The woman helping me gave a great suggestion of chocolate and salted caramel scoops on a waffle cone. It was incredible ice cream. It was such a treat.

Really fun, interesting place to stay in Tahoe. Parking is a bit of a pain (across the street and down a bit), but not bad. There's a hallway that has signatures and comments from hundreds of past guests. We got a bunk bed room which was perfect for two friends. Each bunk had its own outlet for a phone charger. Staff was friendly and helpful. I'd definitely stay here again!

I stayed here for the night with my boyfriend, as it seemed to have a decent location and a cheap price. Overall, it was clean enough and our neighbors were respectful, so noise wasn't an issue. Rooms have a separate passcode to them so that provided an extra protection mechanism, despite other strangers being very close to you and sharing common spaces. It was okay for a night but I wouldn't recommend it.

The rooms were really small and the staircase felt like it was built for small children. To top it off, the heating system is community operated, and one of our neighbors thought

A nice, comfortable place, right in Truckee. Great front room, and only a 6 mile drive to Squaw Valley, so you have a little money left to ski.

A quirky place is well received in an overpriced tourist-trap town. Redlight is on the edge of downtown, "wrong side of the tracks" where you would expect a former bordello to be. Was it actually a bordello, or do they just enjoy making you think that? Who knows, but the front-room decor lives up to it. There are two components here: an ice cream/alcohol bar, and a hostel-style hotel.
Alcohol: With COVID, only two beers on tap. Both craft. Seems like they'd be expensive, but with the hotel-stay discount one beer was $5.25, which is decent for a craft pint on draught. They have a

Redlight? More like Redflag

Just because Redlight is considered a hostel, does that automatically absolve the staff from hospitality? I decided to book a weekend at Redlight Truckee considering the cheap price of the bunk rooms; since I was completely fine with staying in the same room as strangers. The only people that were friendly were some of the guests.

The staff here are jaded they have to serve customers. (They operate an ice-cream shop and bar.) I understand that the service industry sucks and we don't have robots to replace you yet but have an ounce of compassion. Anyone who has

Great concept -- an affordable place to stay in an otherwise expensive area.

It is reasonably clean considering the number of guests and that the house is pretty ancient. A little bit tacky in terms of decor but...whatever.

The kitchen can be rather hectic, space in the 2 fridges is non-existent (basically already crammed full with other people's stuff) and only a small round table or coffee table for eating space so don't expect to prepare any elaborate meals here.

Luckily most everyone seemed to respect each other's space which made the cramped conditions bearable.

Enjoyed two scoops of homemade ice cream (earl grey and blueberry pancake) in a waffle cone, while sitting in a comfy chair with pillows, with my feet propped on a foot stool, listening to Kings of Convenience. Stumbled upon heaven :)

My wife and I were there on June 11, 2019. Rooms are very clean and spacious. They look like recently painted and remodeled. We had a private bathroom that was immaculate. Truckee is a nice city, parking is usually a problem, but we had our own private parking space. They have a speakeasy nicely decorated. Try the Amish popcorn. Several restaurants within walking distance. We had a great time.
Make sure you go see the Jail museum nearby, where "Baby face" Nelson was able to evade the Feds by throwing himself in Jail!!
Make sure you bring a swimsuit as the have a sauna.

I just want to start off, the people here are extremely rude. We wanted to check out the bar and parked outside for literally 1 minute, but immediately an extremely rude woman came out and told us to move our car. Word for word ' I will tow you. Can you not see it's a driveway. Look at the lines. You can't park there. If you do I will tow you right now' Needless to say we decided not to go in and check the place out. Never going to either.

Thanks for your hospitality mam.

By far the best and cleanest hostel I've stayed in. Everything is well thought-out, from the little signs everywhere reminding you to do simple but important things (like clean up after yourself, leave the bathroom fan on, no gross bare feet), to the hooks over the beds, built-in lockers, and the well-stocked kitchen.

The bathrooms are all individual full baths (yay! for relieving us of the dreaded communal showers and toilet stalls). They're always clean too but you never have to worry about anything being closed for cleaning. The rooms are tidy and spotless, the mattress and pillow

Profound and eclectic. This hostel/bar/venue is a gem. Clean. Friendly staff. Lockable lockets in each bunk. And plenty of facilities available for what you need to feel at home.
I suggest this place to anyone blowing through town for snow.

Wonderful hostel. Cool, easy lighting. Red, textured velvet walls. Proprietors are cool as hell. They occasionally do amazing things like burlesque shows (first time I visited I came for one). Excellent beer selection and surprisingly delicious drinks despite not doing hard alcohol, only beer, wine and things like Sony. There's a nice space in the back with a kitchen and lounge area if you want to get away from the bar and front reception area's more exposed intensity.

Also, there's something like 30 hats for you try if you're in the front. Victorian prints decorate
