We are former restaurant owners, who in 1998 "escaped" from the stresses of big city living and moved to Chimney Rock where we purchased a local bed and breakfast inn and, shortly thereafter, our first vacation rental home - River Rose Cottage. After 5 years, we decided to sell the inn and concentrate on the vacation rental home business.
Grist Mill River Cottage had its beginnings as one of the first grist mills on the Rocky Broad River. Fully renovated into a charming cottage in 2019, it now has modern amenities never envisioned by its original owners. Today, its river location is more noted for being one of the best fishing spots in the Hickory Nut Gorge.
Easy lake access, just a 3-minute stroll down the hill to a cove that is private to our small neighborhood which is located on one of the nicest parts of the lake. The house is on the same street where the hit movie "Dirty Dancing" was filmed. Less than 10 minutes away are Chimney Rock State Park, the Lake Lure Marina and Beach, the Rocky Broad River, restaurants, shops and other popular attractions.

We normally stay at a different property (Chimney Lure Retreat) than the one we stayed at this time (Grist Mill). Both managed by Distinctive Mountain Lodging. We were hesitant to try a different place this time but CLR was booked. We were super pleased with the Grist Mill property. The outdoor areas are amazing and the indoor area was very clean, well equipped and comfortable. The only downside for me was that the two guest bedrooms are only accessible by going outside through the screened in porches. My older children didn’t mind at all and enjoyed the seclusion. We all had several debates

10 of my family members stayed at one of the residences they manage in July 2020 and had a wonderful experience. The lakefront home was all we could have asked for, very nicely furnished and very tasteful. It was well stocked with spices, soap and paper products. Everything was in good working order. The management company was very responsive on the few times we contacted them and really seemed to care that we were happy with the rental. We would definitely go back to this house or any of the other properties that this company manages.

We had an amazing experience from the reservation, check in, during, and afterwards! We had a family reunion and rented several lodges. Each one of the properties were great! Spacious, VERY CLEAN, well equipped kitchen, and great location for Lake Lure and Chimney Rock. Sharon is so kind and friendly as is everyone else. They go above and beyond to make sure you have everything and enjoy your stay. I would highly recommend booking your getaway with this company. Cannot wait to go back again soon!!!

We were so pleased with our property and the service we received from both Sharon and Heather. They made the whole process quite simple. The pictures of the property did not do the place justice! Was even better described! The property places are great for family gatherings and there is so much to do in the Lake Lure area. I would highly recommend using Distinctive Mountain Lodging to anyone looking for a fabulous vacation rental.

My family stayed in two of Distinctive Mountain Lodging's cabins - laurel ridge retreat and chimney lure. Sharon was very helpful and friendly in helping us choose the best cabins for our needs. My 78 year old mother went with us and she loved chimney lure. It has a ramp and king bed on main floor. We loved both cabins. They were immaculately cleaned, had everything we need. Beautifully furnished and great views at both cabins. Thanks Sharon and Heather for a wonderful time!

I called to reserve a cabin, booked it and was then told that EVERYONE in my party had to be 25 in order to rent from her which is absolutely ridiculous. I assume this means that Sharon doesn't rent to anyone with children otherwise she is breaking her own rule every time she does. She also wouldn't even have a conversation with me about it, just kept repeating "I'm sorry, I have to decline your reservation.". I couldn't believe a grown woman wouldn't even discuss the issue with me, just kept repeating the same sentence over and over! It was absolutely ridiculous and I am disgusted with her attitude
