The Advaita Meditation Center began as the Philosophy Foundation in 1970, offering classes in downtown Boston. The foundation soon attracted a large group of people interested in investigating and practicing traditions that uncover an underlying transcendent unity in the world and in humanity.

The Philosophy Foundation was originally affiliated with Leon MacLaren, an inspirational spiritual teacher who had a rare gift for transmitting deep experience to his students.MacLaren was a student of Shri Shantananda Saraswati, for many years the Shankaracharya, or spiritual leader, of the Jyotir Math in northern India.

The ancient practice of meditation is firmly rooted in the world's great spiritual traditions. For more than 5,000 years, people of all cultures and religions have used meditation to enhance their mindfulness and their spiritual and mental well-being. The truths discovered through meditation are universal.
Meditation clarifies the mind, opens the heart and leads to spiritual growth. By strengthening mindfulness and producing inner stillness, this ancient practice can also dramatically enhance the way you experience daily life. Our central practice is a mantra meditation (meditating on a silent, repeated sound), which is particularly easy and effective for most people.
We offer you a range of classes and activities for pursuing self-discovery and spiritual inquiry. Our center attracts a steady stream of students from the Boston area and beyond. If you are new to the center, we invite you to participate in any classes that suit your interests and schedule.

We hold new introductory meditation classes, follow-up classes that focus on mantra meditation and Advaita, and a variety of Sanskrit classes several times a year.We also offer various drop-in activities that do not require registration, including our open meditation evenings (see Meditation below).
The Advaita Meditation Center offers a variety of Sanskrit classes for different levels of experience. These classes delve into Advaita philosophy and complementary traditions, as well as the beauty and intricacies of the language itself. Advanced Panini Study: Advanced study of the sutras of the great Sanskrit grammarian, Panini.
The Advaita Meditation Center offers a variety of drop-in activities, and they provide easy ways to learn about our organization and pursue specific interests at the same time. Some activities are held weekly and others meet once a month. We'd love to know you are coming, so you may register ahead of time, but that is not necessary.

How lucky I was to have had such a welcoming, warm and wise community when I lived in the Boston area. The classes are small interactive and thought provoking. The teachings inspired me into new ways of thinking and being and a more fullfilling life!

Welcoming community! I felt very comfortable within seconds of arriving.
Beautiful, clean, and spacious house.
The format of a meditation session seems to be this:
Begin with a series of guided relaxation exercises. Then reading and pondering curated excerpts from spiritual texts like Bhagavad Gita, or writings of conscious people. This is followed by a group meditation.
I highly recommend dropping in if you have an interest in tapping into the powers of meditation. This community is a non-invasive, low-commitment, positive vibration assist to one's own journey of discovering comfort and joy
