In 2021, Grendel's Den Restaurant & Bar celebrates 50 years in Harvard Square, Cambridge. We're celebrating and honoring this historic milestone by creating an entire year of special projects like a podcast series about food and drink from the last 5 decades, a vinyl cover album featuring all local bands covering songs from 1971, cocktail classes, interviews with our owners, specialty collectibles, VIP discounts and more to engage with and support our creative community. That's where you come in.
Grendel's Den offers indoor and outdoor seating on a first come first serve basis. We serve a variety of wholesome, casual dishes, original cocktails, new and old world wines, and a rotating selection of local and international beers. What we are not: fine dining. What we are: delicious and affordable food served with a smile.

My Reuben sandwich was flavorful, though a little dry. Couldn't find much flavor in the cole slaw, but it did have welcome crunch to it.
The main attraction here is the patio, abutting a lively & historic park often abuzz with musicians performing, students sitting, children playing, & pedestrians strolling. The evening scene is mellower, but still very inviting.

Food is solidly decent. Not amazing. A little pricey for the quality and amount—which is to say, not at all bad. Just a little more than I'd be willing to pay. Portion sizes are a little small (I don't eat a lot of food, either).
I've been for drinks and they had a good selection. I'd say drinks > food here, food is more of an accessory to the drinks.
Outdoor seating has heated lamps for colder weather which is nice. Staff seems very friendly both times I've been.

We really enjoyed this little restaurant. We went with a group of 6 and we were all a bit surprised by how good the food was. I think our initial impression was due to there being a pop-up thrift shop right when you walk in, but if you move beyond that and take a table and eat your experience will be different.
We really liked our waitress, she was sweet and friendly. We also had the impossible chili, the tuna salad, the southwest salad, a chicken caesar wrap, a burger, chicken tenders with fries and bangers and mash. I am a bit crazy about chicken and it not being chewy and this was fresh, grilled

Not sure if the bartender was incompetent or high. She repeated questions multiple times but struggled to actually get the order right, couldn't explain menu items, needed assistance from other staff to make drinks, and generally lacked knowledge of the restaurant's drink and menu items. She also repeatedly made inappropriate contact with a male staff member who didn't seem to have any actual purpose.
My food was edible though my husband's was not. He ordered a burger, but it was so over cooked he could barely cut through it. He was never asked a temperature, and we were never asked how the food

It's fine. Don't make a special trip to come here unless you bring a scholarly book and want to pretend for a day that you're working hard on your thesis or dissertation while drinking a few beers. Staff is nice, food was decent, history of the establishment is interesting and cool. Decent lunch specials. They take pride in the fact that they don't serve mainstream brews.

Edit: adding a star to my review because of responsive owner who incorporated feedback. I will certainly give this place a 2nd try because of that.
You do not get happy hour prices if you enjoy your meal outside, not sure why this policy exists.
Weird liquor law requires a food item to be purchased with any alcohol. Not the fault of the bar.
Decent food, decent drink. Sandwich was greasy; had to sop up with napkins. The mojito had limes muddled too much letting the bitterness of the rind permeate. Otherwise all-around flavor of food and drink was okay.
Very Friendly wait staff- though very
