John started working in the tailoring trade at the age of 21. Opening the store in our current location, he has worked in the industry for over 37 years and comes from a long line of custom tailors. His Grandfather Joseph and Great Grandfather Frank were both custom tailors in Dayton. In 1998 John was elected President of the Custom Tailors and Designers Association, receiving the prestigious Jackson Medal for his service.
He was the youngest President in the history of the 135 year old Association. He also served on the Board of Directors for 9 years. He has received nine Fashion Awards from the Association, recognizing superior achievement in design, fit and construction. John has been called on frequently to speak to the industry on subjects ranging from Garment fit to customer service.

Services
Frank M. Wittmann first started making clothing in Dayton Ohio in 1905, to this day we strive to maintain his heritage and, where possible, to improve upon it. Our garments are still assembled around a German pad stitched canvas, with hand finished collars and armholes - just like Frank did. If you want to learn more about every detail, or if you just want the best, rest assured you are in the right hands.
In addition to custom tailoring, we offer alterations to clothing. Our normal delivery is one week from drop off. You do not need an appointment, stop in any time during our regular business hours 9-6 Monday-Friday and 9-1 Saturday. Below is a list of our most common alteration prices, some exceptions apply.

I have had a couple things tailored here and I am always impressed with the quality and craftsmanship. Not only is the service exceptional, but the professionalism and care that I experience here are very reassuring. I have not actually been a customer but I took in a sport coat to see if the buttonhole needed to be made functional. The owner was very polite and patient in looking at my jacket and showing me that it was functional. I will be sure to support this local business in the future. I would love to get a custom made shirt here soon

In the age of disposable clothes just consider a custom made shirt or blouse. You pick the material, buttons and style, and it will actually fit you! Suits, jackets, slacks either casual or formal made for you can also be yours. You will be in the competent hands of a multi generation family tailor business. Simple alterations are also available and reasonably priced. Enjoy!

Let me start by saying that I am not a suit guy.... I'm a shorts T shirts blue jeans kind of guy. Recently my son was getting married and I tasked John Whitman with making me feel comfortable in a suit.... While not nearly as comfortable a shorts and T-shirt :), over all it was a pretty exceptional experience... I would certainly recommend them and if heaven forbid I need another suit I would go back again

I was told by Mr Wittmann that my new suit looked "absolutely terrible" due to a small ripple between my shoulders. It didn't bother me, but it bothered him so much that he wouldn't alter the pants to the suit. He had me try on other jackets, bigger jackets that still had the ripple in the back, so I'm not sure if the suit quality wasn't good enough for him or what. He suggested returning the suit, saying "these are your new babies and you have to do what you have to do with them". So I changed back into my clothes and I was shocked that he told me the

Quality is the best. Locally owned for years which is a plus. I was expecting my alteration for my bridesmaids (David's bridal ling) dress to take about a month and be around $70. It was a surprise that it was finished in a week and only $54 dollars! If I ever need to alter something again or if someone asks me for a recommendation, this will be the place to go to!

You get what you pay for.
They are on the pricier side, but do beautiful work. I've had one dress taken in and one dress hemmed. Both were done very well (probably stitched better than how I bought them) and came out perfect the first time.
The gentleman who helped me was courteous and professional. I'm sure I'll be back.

Expensive, but if you want the job done right the first time, come here.
They repaired moth damage I had to a number of suits and dress slacks due to a water leak that spread into my suit closet.
They also fixed two separate repairs made by other individuals who did a poor job. I figured since both items, a dress shirt and a pair of slacks, had already been chopped up and further damaged from the previous repairs that they would be a lost cause. This tailor managed to fix the items and make the repairs look clean.

I came in to get a suit tailored for a few interviews. The owner, John, was very easy to work with and completed the job in a very timely fashion. I was very pleased with the job. Most recently, I visited to get the hem replaced on a pair of pants (work completed somewhere else). I was in a hurry to get the work done and he completed it on the spot, for free. I will get all of my tailoring done here in the future.

This comes with a caveat: if you are like me and come here with hopes of leaving with a trim, contemporary slim-ish suit (the current fad), consider elsewhere.
I was hoping to have my box-ish suit gifted to me for my best friend's upcoming wedding turned into a slimmed down, contemporary version. And, since I top off at an imposing 5'6" on a good day, having a slimming suit is pretty crucial to assuaging my vanity. However, during measurements, the proprietor proceeded to espouse his acute adversity towards all things skinny and slim--sadly, precisely the shape I was going for
