In 1938, as America was recovering from the Great Depression, the employees of Inland Empire Paper Company founded what is known today as Spokane Media Federal Credit Union. The original mission of the credit union was to encourage savings and grant members easier access to money for use in emergencies.
SMFCU expanded its field of membership in 1973 to include radio, television and newspaper employees. Because we are a federally chartered institution, we adhere to guidelines that ensure our exclusivity. However, family members of those who work for the media, even though not employed in the media themselves, are eligible for membership.

Our free Bill Pay is easy to use, completely secure and gives you the flexibility to schedule your own payments to companies and individuals that you choose. The first step is to activate the process by calling the credit union. Then you enter the payees' addresses (some companies are already pre-loaded) and account numbers and off you go.
Shared branching through the CO-OP network means you have FREE access to over 5000 credit union branches across the city or across the country. You simply walk into a CO-OP credit union on the network, give them your account number at Spokane Media CU and show them current picture ID. Deposit money, take a withdrawal, transfer funds or get a cashier's check-just as though you were at home.
Our free debit card is a convenient way to pay for goods and services anywhere that MasterCard tm is accepted. It can also be used to access cash at ATMs, but we recommend that when you are making a purchase and a merchant gives you the option of cash back-you say "yes" and avoid ATM fees. You must have a checking account with the credit union to access the debit card.

I saw a negative review saying something to the affect that they wished the employees at SMFCU Were younger and more knowledgeable. I couldn't disagree more. Before entering into any large financial transaction, like the HELOC loan I took out with SMFCU. I always do my homework. I took about a month exploring my options. I talked in depth with 3 lending institutions, and reviewed online options. (Lending Tree, Quicken etc.) I found SMFCU not only knowledgeable, but they had the best rate and payment options available. And I was blown away by how fast and easy it was.
