Still Mind Zendo
Still Mind Zendo, a Zen meditation center in New York City formed in 1994, is in the lineage of Zen Master Taizan Maezumi Roshi and the White Plum Asanga. We are fortunate to have three teachers in our sangha. Our founder and guiding teacher, Roshi Janet Jiryu Abels, is a dharma successor to Roshi Robert Jinsen Kennedy, while Sensei Marisa Cespedes and Sensei Jean Gallagher are dharma successors to Roshi Janet.

Roshi Gregory Hosho Abels, another successor to Roshi Kennedy, recently retired from Still Mind. Still Mind Zendo emphasizes the practice of zazen (sitting meditation) above all else, recognizing it as a way for people to deepen their insight and realization of their essential self, which is nothing other than the realization of their lives.

Roshi Janet Jiryu Abels, founder of Still Mind Zendo, has been a teacher in the lineage of Taizan Maezumi Roshi and the White Plum Asanga since 2000, when she became a dharma successor of her teacher, Roshi Robert Jinsen Kennedy. In 2015, she received Inka from Roshi Kennedy and the honorific title of Roshi.
We invite you to further your commitment to Zen practice by becoming a member and supporting the zendo that creates the structure for your practice to develop. For Our Teachers: In order to keep our dues as low as possible, our teachers have waived receiving a salary, depending solely on the ancient Buddhist custom of dana - free giving.
Our twice-annual Weekend Silent Retreat at the Mariandale Retreat Center in the Hudson Valley of New York is open to the public, both to those currently engaged in Zen practice and those who would like to renew their commitment. We also welcome those who have no prior Zen experience but who wish to be introduced to the disciplines of Zen.
This week-long extended retreat takes place in the Hudson Valley at Seven Meadows Farm, owned and operated by Roshi Janet and Roshi Gregory. It is open primarily to members of Still Mind Zendo. Each sesshin is limited to 13 participants and is offered twice each summer to accommodate as many people as possible.
Rohatsu is the annual commemoration of the Buddha's Awakening. We also invite sangha members to particiapte in a week of more intense practice. We celebrate Rohatsu at Still Mind Zendo with a Rohatsu Practice Period that begins on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. During this time, practitioners are encouraged to extend zazen times, to attend the zendo as often as possible and, in general, to raise awareness about their practice.
