This was a great little gym at one point. Unfortunately they are incredibly understaffed and i'm curious if anyone even manages it. During a global pandemic the moment they could charge you of course they did and also added fees on that could not be explained to me. The owner Brian seems to have a great personality via his business reviews and responses........ I'm so happy that places like this stay in business.

Apparently he needs our money more than we do but I'm tired of paying his bills and I'm sure the rest of your customers are. Nowadays you cannot even go in to find

I was a late adopter to returning to the gym, but when I did back in March '21 there were as strict and obvious safety precautions in place as I think are possible.

At a certain point, you have to accept that you're personally choosing to enter an enclosed space with other people sweating, huffing, and puffing in proximity to yourself during a pandemic.

Outside of working out in a bubble, there's always an element of risk in doing anything, but from where I stand I don't think Southport Fitness is deserving of the low scores I'm seeing.

The onus for safety is on you

S ss!! I joined this gym thinking I was going be like LPAC and man was I was wrong. This facility is small and doesn't have a lot of equipment of which I'm use too. So I paid for a membership without viewing it first (lessened learned). Anyways, I joined in April 12th and on April 13th emailed them to let them know I was not happy with my experience. I did not receive a response back from them until I called to follow up which was 2 weeks later. Then Colin proceeds to email their company policy and which why I can not receive a refund . Ok fine no problem a lost on my end! Then he

I find myself in the unfortunate position of having to respond to Brian C.'s contradictory and inaccurate reply to my 12/24/20 post.

Before I begin, I must point out that as the supposed owner of the facility, one would think that Mr. C.'s public response would incorporate a certain level of professionalism that one should expect from a Southport business owner. Perhaps a cursory review of how other business owners respond to negative feedback would serve Mr. C. well. His combative and condescending language should send off a warning signal to anyone that finds themselves engaging in

Love this gym! I had two different gym memberships prior to COVID (one near work and one near home). After COVID hit, trying to pause my membership with the big chain gym near where I worked was a nightmare, while Southport Fitness has been communicative, transparent, and helpful. This is the only membership I’ve kept due to the stellar way they’ve… handled COVID. It may be a small neighborhood gym but it’s well-maintained, super clean, the staff is friendly, and I can get a great workout in without compromising my health. Personal training sessions with Kenzie have also

Do not join this gym. Complete lack of management and communication to members. I had been a member of this gym for years. When COVID hit there was ZERO response from the facility - were they open? closed? taking cleaning precautions? No idea - no emails, no social media posts, nothing.

They then apparently reopened in July... how would one know this? That's a great question. Again, no email, no social media info, etc. They immediately began charging clients again with zero notice. The management is completely incompetent and there's little to no staff at the gym.

Horrible customer service. They charge without my consent while my membership was on hold because of Covid. They also request me to pay a extra month to be able to cancel my membership.

Terrible experience with this gym during the COVID-19 pandemic. First, the gym failed to give any notice to its members that they would be opening on July 1, 2020. Second, the gym failed to provide notice to its members that they would be charged their monthly fee of $49.95 on July 1, directly reopening. Third, I personally emailed management on July 2 requesting to cancel my membership and that no charge be drawn from my account for the month of July. I did not receive a response until July 12; however, that did not stop the gym from charging me $49.95 on July 6th. What makes this worse and more

DO NOT JOIN! Charged both my wife and I for an extra month after cancelling during covid! We have a newborn in the house and cannot use the gym for obvious reasons. Already paid for July without using the gym. Very unprofessional, “Too bad for you” attitude.

This place is unprofessional and overpriced. They charged my account during the pandemic despite being closed. They also raised prices by 33% last year. Check out UFC Wrigley, it’s a much better deal with better facilities!

Have been a member for two years. Joined because it's centrally located, open late hours, most of the equipment works, and their front desk staff are kind.

But management is problematic. As mentioned below, they are intermittently changing up the wrong things. Instituting ridiculous price hikes under the guise of being "competitive," (what?) then facing the outcry and renigging. Shortening staffed desk hours but requiring multiple entry checks, in essence causing their guests to be their staff. Taking the time to send admonishing emails about petty issues, but not preventatively

I joined this gym because it is a few blocks from home and has nice fitness equipment. They charge an init fee and a monthly fee and tell you that you can end the membership anytime.
I visited a few times and each time the place had loud music playing in the workout area. Not too terrible- many gyms do this. But this place runs hip hop with highly inappropriate lyrics. ("F$&@ it F$&@ it. I don't give a f$&@'in nothin").
So i emailed the management about the offensive tunes. And the manager, Colin, emailed me and suggested I join a gym that plays classical

I've been a member at Southport fitness since moving to the Southport corridor 2 years ago. At first it was a nice gym, get your workout in and get out. But I've noticed changes that have brought down the quality, from enforcing unnecessary sign in steps (scanning multiple times) and the general overcrowding of the gym and lack of updates to the equipment. The last straw was the hiring of a new employee that clearly doesn't belong in a gym environment - 3 words describe him: ponytail, loud, non-athlete.

The changes make me happy I'm leaving the Southport corridor and joining

I actually train people here individually and it is a great little spot! Lots of good equipment, bands, kettle bells etc. Lots of natural light, good tunes, reasonably clean.
The staff is really super friendly & knowledgeable. Tom, Ed, Vitale, AJ, marten, so nice to me when I arrive to work. Classes look rocking & strong when I peek in, I can't wait to find time to take some! Parking is surprisingly good for such a cute yuppie neighborhood.
Good looking members, they should get off their ear buds and start talking to each other!

I live in Lakeview and was a member of this gym for a little over a year. I was a regular and had no issues! Pretty much the cheapest gym you will be able to find (I paid around $35 a month) which is a really good deal for Chicago!

The equipment is all updated, if anything there might have been one or two treadmills down at a time, but that's expected. It does get busy after work (5 - 7PM) but that is also expected. Friday afternoons, along with Saturdays and Sundays I would practically have the gym to myself which is such a nice treat.

I actually ended up switching to a gym about three

Not really sure what the bad reviews are on about at this gym. I frankly love this local, quiet, up-to-date gym!

I'm so glad I managed to find a clean, friendly staffed gym after my graduation from college. All of the equipment here are clean and state-of-the-art Lifetime Fitness equipment. Sure, it gets a bit busy around 5-6:00, but when I come in at 11 PM, I basically get to have the whole, entire gym to myself and maybe one other person.

The cleanliness and friendly staff coupled with my amazing trainer Matine makes me so happy I signed up with Southport Fitness after moving to Lakeview

**if you want to take classes --- stay away!

I joined this gym due to the proximity to the Brown line and my apartment. You certainly get what you pay for - I came from Equinox where it was $$$ but they had amazing facilities. You pay $ here, which was fine until, mid-way through my year-long contract, they decided to switch their class schedule and structure. I joined because they told me I could attend the classes for what I was paying a month. They tried to tell everyone that in order to continue taking the classes we were taking we had to pay $199/month.

Are you kidding me?

Overall: You get what you pay for, and Southport fitness gets the job done. Plus, it's right off the brown line.

The good: Pretty good deal in terms of what you pay vs. what you get, especially if you catch one of their specials. The service is always friendly and helpful if you need them. They have WiFi too if you want to stream music/videos. There's not a TON of equipment or weights, but they have plenty to work with. Obviously, the biggest perk is that it's right off the brown line.

The not-so-good: The locker rooms are tiny, any more than 2 people at the same time is a crowd
