David Hixon Psychotherapy
Change is inevitable in life. My work as a counselor helps you make positive changes in your life and understand any barriers to making progress. Oftentimes, a precursor to change is strife, difficulty, and confusion about what we truly want. Discerning what we desire - what fills us with vitality- is the work of psychotherapy.

It can be difficult to know what we want if we're stuck in habits, relationships, or patterns that no longer serve us or exist only to help us numb ourselves. Our minds crave novelty, but they also desire stability. But when stability turns to rigidity turns to stagnation - it becomes time for compassionate self-examination.

There is a misconception that depression is just sadness. While sadness is a part of the depressive experience, it fails to capture the complexity. Depression is a quagmire that may include anger, irritability, lethargy, and anxiety. Maybe we're high-functioning depressive. We may work to exhaustion, over-consume alcohol or drugs, compulsively exercise, shop, or spend hours online.
Attachment Therapy understands how our history shapes our present. Early childhood is the most important period in our mind's development. During infancy, a time of exponential brain growth, our minds are rapidly encoding life lessons. Early experiences disproportionately affect the structure of our minds.
Group Therapy is an opportunity to have deeper and more fulfilling relationships with ourselves and other people. As social creatures, we cannot meaningfully live a life without having deep relationships. While relationships may have historically created pain and suffering for us, they also provide us the means to our own peace and happiness.
Depression, anxiety, panic attacks, flashbacks, and insomnia are all common responses to traumatic events. If you feel caught in the past, reliving unpleasant events, you may benefit from EMDR therapy. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of therapy intended to treat those that have experienced any form of trauma, big or small.
Mindfulness-based therapy is founded on the skill of observing our own mind. Mindfulness Therapy and Buddhist Psychology assert that learning to watch our own mind produces insight and clarity and results in less suffering. The untrained mind is like a wild animal: powerful, unruly, and full of energy.
