The Mountain Gate Family Restaurant was opened 30 years ago in Thurmont, Maryland and quickly became a popular dining destination. The restaurant was opened by the McCleaf family, who previously owned a nearby truck stop in Thurmont. The McCleafs had a vision to offer a true family restaurant, one where you could be comfortable taking your family and offer a quality product at a reasonable price.
You haven't really dined country-style until you've experienced our delicious buffet, served fresh and hot every day - and at a very reasonable price. Everything is cooked and baked right here from scratch, and we take pride in the compliments we receive from everyone. Our breakfast buffet is filled to bursting with scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries, waffles, fresh fruits and juices, and more.

I have come to this place on and off for over 20 years, and nothing much changed since.
The food is great; they could tune down the amount of sweet used, but otherwise excellent.
Great service.
I think I have had the same cashier on every visit, and she always has some attitude on my way out. If it wasn't for that, it would be a 5 star review.

Don't eat here, unless you want a side order of covid with your mediocre meal. I should have known that a business with trump merch in the gift shop wouldn't care about protecting their customers from a virus they refuse to believe exists. What I don't understand is why their food has ANY good reviews. Eating here was a risk not worth taking.

It is mostly a buffet. Sign at front door says masks should be worn when not at table. When I walked to buffet 8 out of 10 folks were un masked. Restaurant seems fine with it. Watched a guy scratch himself(yes your right, he scratched himself exactly where you are thinking) as he walked up to buffet with no mask, proceeded to fill up plate without the gloves they ask you to wear on your "reach in and mess with yours and other folks food" hand.
Seems like a local germs only place.

Nothing special. Not much to offer for any special dietary needs, especially for diabetics. Mostly a lot of high carbs, plenty of deserts yet I have never seen any sugar free options. If you just eat off the salad bar you can be safe. On the protein side your best option is chicken but remember it's fried and you don't want to be consuming much of that.

Every time we are driving on Rt-15 we plan to stop for a meal at this restaurant. The atmosphere is perfect for our kids as well as all ages. The fried chicken is by far my favorite item on the extensive buffet. Then there are the pies! Of every kind and flavor! After I leave I promise not to be back for a long time until I work out all the calories!
