This is a team of driven veterinary professionals united by one mission: take care of your pet the way we would take care of our own. Every single time. Dr. John W. Samon has lived here since 1974. His family has lived in Austin since the early 1900's, and many of them still live here today.
Dr. Samon received his Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science in 1992, Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Science in 1994, and his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (Cum Laude) from Texas A&M in 1997.His special interests include surgery, geriatric care and pain management. Dr. Samon is a lifetime member of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association and is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

We utilize the safest available anesthetics to provide an extra margin of safety, especially for our older or high-risk patients. Using the most modern equipment, the patient's vital signs are monitored during all anesthetic procedures. We monitor our patients closely to keep them as safe as possible during procedures that require general anesthesia.
Our mission is to provide impeccable care to our patients by incorporating tools and strategies to minimize and alleviate fear, anxiety and stress as much as possible. We want our patients to be relaxed and comfortable with veterinary care and, through inspiration and education, our clients to be partners in their health.

I cannot say enough good things about this place. I have a 12 y/o chow who needed surgery for quality of life reasons, and every other vet I’d been to was either dismissive or extremely pessimistic about surgery at his age and wanted to just stick him on painkillers. Dr. Samon was recommended by a friend, and the entire staff was great from the beginning. I received a full explanation of all my options, as well as a sense of confidence that my dog’s age wasn’t the massive barrier it had previously been portrayed as. Staff is very friendly, incredibly patient and thorough with questions. We recently had our dog treated, including check-up and minor surgery, and felt supported, informed, and positive about it. The booklet that was sent home was full of information and helpful, and the picture and opening note written as if from our dog was incredibly cute and made me laugh at a time when I was worried.
As kind and helpful as this was, I would be remiss if I did not also mention the extreme kindness and compassion we received when we brought our very elderly cat for treatment and, then, for his end-of-life visit

Very nice staff. Took Elsa in for an urgent care visit even though we have never been there. It shows they care. Everything was explained before and after. The vet explained everything to me. the only negative is they do not file the PetPlan insurance claim for me. But they do give me the necessary paperwork to file.

Dr. McCoy was wonderful with not only the new puppy but also explaining things and letting my 2 year old Granddaughter "help". The care y'all have given for our dogs over the years is second to none. The communication and the genuine care and compassion of the doctors and ALL the staff is what keeps us coming back and also recommending Star of Texas to any I know that is looking for a veterinarian.

Excellent care for our dogs for several years! Excellent veterinarians , excellent staff , and the best care I have ever received from any veterinarian practices . What I appreciate most is how much compassion and patience they practice with pets and the public. I also appreciate how they offer different options for treatments for pets and work with you on the best options fir your budget. I also feel my pet is 100% safe with them.

My nervous pup left her first appointment happy with a diagnosis and treatment plan. The staff was amazing with her, and the backyard appointment was a huge stress reliever. The stepping stones leading to the backyard are too far apart for my short legs, but I’ll sacrifice to keep my pup happy and healthy.

Our first visit here was during Covid. Because of this, I had to stay in the car while the cats were taken inside. The thought of this was a little difficult, but the staff made this especially easy. Not only were the logistics easy, but they were SOOO friendly and sweet that I had no worries about sending in the cats without me. This clinic went the extra mile to make me feel comfortable, they were nonjudgmental about my financials, and they even took photos of the cats and gave us a sweet little shwag bag. I DEFINITELY recommend this clinic.

I originally chose Star of Texas because they offered curbside service, and I was not comfortable going in even though my puppy was only 10 weeks old. The office staff was very friendly and helpful. Dr. Samon was knowledgeable, kind, and patient in answering all my questions. We have been back two times since then and called several times to ask questions. Every time they have been extremely thorough in providing information and even emailing additional handouts. I'm relieved to have found such a kind and trusting vet with attention to quality of service. Thanks for taking such great care

I have nothing bad to say about our experiences at Star of Texas Vet, they genuinely seem to love our pups and care about them. The staff is very loving to my dogs and show true concern with their well being. Dr. Sabo removed a tumor from my sweet pup and has been so great before, during and after the whole scary process.
