Maiko had a dream and a vision - Trained in Japan, in her heart she knew she wanted to pursue her dream of opening her own salon one day. That one day happened 20 years ago when she opened Glam Up in San Francisco - Japan Town. Since then, there are countless clients that have requested her services.

Their website says you need to call them to make an appointment if it's your first time. I called. No one picked up. I called again and again, but was always directed to the voice mail. So I decided to book online. After a few days I decided to cancel the appointment because I was skeptical about their customer service and skills by looking at photos. So I tried canceling the appointment online. I was surprised the canceling function was disabled by this hair salon. So I had to call them again. No answer! So I left a voicemail saying that I want to cancel and would like to have a confirmation

I've been going to Glam-up for over a decade or so now. There has been some amazing artists working there. Maiko is the owner and has done my hair the last two times. I get the Japanese straight perm with her. She's attentive and checks the process as the chemicals do their magic. She's super careful not to get it on my scalp, face, neck, etc. She straightens extremely small sections of my hair to make sure it's as straight as I asked her for it. I haven't had my hair cut since 2019, and after moving home to San Francisco it was hard for me to find a hairstylist I could take a chance with but I decided to go with Maiko and I loved the haircut she gave me! I booked with her online, and the haircut itself went really well. They take your temperature and ask you all the standard covid questions before entering, then take you to wash your hands before settling in. I showed Maiko a picture of what I wanted, and she confirmed lengths and told me where my bangs and layers would start before working on my hair. She obviously had a lot of experience

I really love my new hair cut by Aya! She was very friendly and her service was amazing!
Firstly, she talked about what I want before cutting my hair to make sure we're both on the same page. After she's done, she also asked if I want to add bangs or more layers to it to get the best look that I want. She also gave me a nice massage at the end of the appointment.
I had a great experience and my hair turned out exactly like I wanted it to be. I will definitely come back for Aya again for my haircut!

Maiko did a phenomenal job with my thermal hair straightening. She asked if I wanted my hair very flat/pin straight or less flat. I told her I did not want it too flat. I generally like my hair to be straight but not too flat, as I think some volume looks good. She graciously did my hair in three sections so it wouldn't be so flat and it turned out amazing! She also gave me a haircut and it looks great.
It's been several years since I've gotten thermal straightening and a Japanese style haircut and I am very happy with the quality of my services with Maiko. Will be back!

I've been going to Glam-Up for over 4 years now. I get a Japanese straight perm and a trim about 3-4 times a year. I have nothing but praise for this salon. My stylist has been Maiko for about 3 years, though I've worked with other stylists a few times if Maiko wasn't available, and I've only had positive experiences with everyone.

I have been getting my hair straightened for almost 20 years and finding Maiko and Glam up was a godsend for me. I started straightening my hair in high school when I lived in LA and had been traveling back to LA ever since then to get my hair straightened (even when I lived in NYC). I've had two wonderful haircut experiences with Shiho at Glam-Up since I found the shop in December 2017. She is phenomenal! Shiho is great at cutting and styling Asian hair and gives a relaxing head massage. I'm usually shy and don't talk much at salons but Shiho is so sweet and friendly that I feel comfortable with her. The salon is small but has modern equipment and the prices are reasonable compared to other SF locations. I stumbled upon this salon on a whim but will be coming back!

I went there together with my brother. We both had hair treatment, and I got a haircut. The lady who did my hair was nice and accommodating, and she did not do anything wrong, but the result wasn't amazing either. Overall, it was an Okay experience but I feel like their service is bit overpriced. Would recommend the place if you are looking for refreshing yourself but not for major makeover.

Shiho is absolutely fantastic!! She was sooo nice and absolutely talented with hair styling! Went to her for a shampoo and blow dry and she nailed it! Back and forth from LA for work and play, I am so cautious of who does my hair and if you want a lovely blow-out style hair. She's the girl to go to!

Maiko did my hair and it turned out great! I did my first Japanese straightening treatment in Tokyo in March and it never was straight and still frizzy. I decided to redo my treatment before my trip to Thailand in a few days since it had become wavy and frizzy again.
The whole treatment took around 4.5 hours and was less than $300 for my frizzy, thick hair. I think this is very reasonable and achieved great results. My hair took really well to the treatment and it is silky and pretty much pin straight. I told Maiko I wanted to keep my length and only to cut as little as possible and she did and

I love this place. The service is exceptional, staff are super friendly, and I always leave this place with a smile and great haircut.
I've been getting my haircut by Itsumi since I've moved to San Francisco a year and half ago, and wouldn't go to anyone else. Her recommendations for styling and attention to detail are amazing. I am always happy with the magic she performs on my hair.

It's my second visit here to get a cut from Yuji, but not for me, it was for my friend. and LOVED it. I felt bad though because we came late, forgot there would be a festival so the muni is PACKED. Anyhow, we arrived almost 30 minutes late, but the hair cur was perfect. Showing him a picture definitely helped him a lot, and my friend was happy. :)

I never had a hair stylist that made me go back to them at least a few times in a year and Maiko is the first one. I swear, she's got magical hands - I love the hair styles that she had created for me in the past few years. I've never tried so many different styles before that look so amazing!
The downside of getting haircuts with her (on weekends especially) would be that you probably have to make an appointment 2 weeks in advance so don't expect to
