Coastal Science & Engineering (CSE) is an award-winning team of scientists and engineers who specialize in solving problems in the coastal zone. The mainstay of our practice is beach restoration drawing on decades of experience in evaluating coastal erosion in a wide range of settings.

We determine the principal erosion factors at a site then design solutions that work with nature-doing this with scientific integrity, responsiveness, and dedication to clients' needs.CSE has successfully completed over 50 beach restoration projects involving over 75 miles of shoreline and over 40 million cubic yards of sand.
Services
CSE is equipped to complete hydrographic surveys, sediment sampling, beach profiles, borrow area searches, and measurement of waves, tides, and currents. We are certified divers with extensive experience in deployment of in-situ gauges under adverse conditions. In a recent project in Charleston Harbor, CSE deployed nine current, tide, and wave gauges for a hydraulics study in connection with a planned bridge crossing.
Coastal Science & Engineering (CSE) specializes in engineering, planning, and scientific studies in the coastal zone. For over 35 years, our specialists in the fields of coastal and environmental engineering, geology, and oceanography have developed innovative solutions to problems related to coastal development, marina and port facilities, point- and nonpoint-source discharges, and natural hazards along the coast.
Coastal Science & Engineering has developed plans and has supervised construction of over 50 beach nourishment projects in South Carolina and North Carolina during the past 35 years. Projects in South Carolina have involved over one-third of the developed coast (14 localities from North Myrtle Beach to Hunting Island) giving our team exceptional familiarity with the range of conditions in the state.
CSE scientists and engineers have completed detailed shoreline assessments at hundreds of sites in a wide range of settings from the tropics to high latitudes. Studies have been completed along micro-, meso-, and macro-tidal shorelines with a range of wave climates and fetches. Our work has led to numerous peer-reviewed papers on coastal erosion, littoral sediment budgets, shore protection, and predictions of sea-level-rise impacts.
CSE maintains an extensive complement of field survey equipment for conducting measurements in support of our shoreline erosion assessments and beach nourishment plans. CSE's U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain, Drew Giles (50 GRT Master #272015), pilots the RV Southern Echo for offshore data collection.
