Social, physical, and cognitive growth are unique to each child. To your child. St. James Preschool is committed to building on, developing, and expanding the unique abilities of each child within an atmosphere of joy. The joy of friendship. The joy of growing. The joy of learning. Founded in 1963, St. James Preschool has been a much-loved fixture of San Francisco's Inner Richmond neighborhood for 55 years.
We are a nonsectarian and nonprofit preschool, providing quality education to children from ages 2 to 5. As a small school with an exceptional child-to-teacher ratio, we are dedicated to a developmental child-centered philosophy that fosters personal growth and respects a child's spirit. Children are grouped by age in three engaging and responsive classroom environments, with most starting in our twos program.

We think of ourselves as the small school that makes a big difference. Our class sizes range between 9 children (for our twos program) and 16 children (for preK), with 2 to 3 teachers per classroom, assuring that every child in our care is seen, heard, and loved. Our programs are housed in three newly renovated classrooms and a modest but mighty outdoor play space.
Small steps lead to big strides in the St. James Preschool Turtle classroom, for our youngest children (ages 2 to 3). Free exploration and open-ended activities are the key. Within this environment, Turtle teachers patiently yet progressively cultivate social development, foster self-control, and initiate basic skill acquisition.
Imagination, invention, exploration: There's so much to learn at this age, and plenty of time to do it. No rushing in our Wildcat classroom, for children ages 3 to 4. Activity centers come to the fore: dramatic play, small manipulatives, big and small block construction, arts and crafts, and literacy.
PreK children are passionate about learning. Our teachers are passionate about their craft. In this year, we introduce "content time, " when teachers specializing in subjects like math, science, and literacy work with our students within a more structured yet fun environment. During the course of the year after careful observation, preK teachers initiate a "project, " based on the children's emerging interests.
We recognize that many San Francisco families have dual-working parents with varying schedules. St. James Preschool has you covered with Afternoons in the Den. This optional extended day program is a mixed-age "family style" grouping, with children ages 2 to 5. While the program has its own routines (nap/rest, snack, circle, story time, outside play, activity time), children can also work on projects that emerge from their morning activities.
