Calvary Nursery School is a San Francisco preschool that has been serving the San Francisco community since 1954. With preschool and pre-kindergarten programs designed around child-initiated play, inquiry, curiosity, and a climate of warmth and respect, Calvary provides a nurturing community. A community in which children and families can grow and feel supported during the early childhood years, where children emerge ready for kindergarten and with the foundation for a life-long love of friendship and learning.
Services
Calvary Nursery School was created in 1954, when a group of parents from Calvary Presbyterian Church decided that a preschool would greatly serve their community of growing families and young children. From those humble beginnings in the church basement, with only one small class, Calvary has grown into a large, well-respected program where generations of San Franciscans have received an exceptional preschool education.
How did you get into the field of early childhood education? I began my career as an elementary teacher and then went back to school to earn my credential in Special Education. After teaching special education for 10 years in public and private settings, I took a year off to have my first child. Once she was in preschool I decided to open up my own preschool to stay home with her.
Calvary Nursery School is located in the Education Building of Calvary Presbyterian Church at the corner of Fillmore and Jackson Streets in the Pacific Heights neighborhood. With views of the Golden Gate Bridge from our rooftop playground and located just one block away from Alta Plaza Park and Playground, our school benefits from the physical beauty and amenities of Pacific Heights' Fillmore Street neighborhood.
As Calvary's longest running program, the preschool classes serve children ages 3-5, in a morning program that runs Monday - Friday, 8:45 - 11:45. Children are grouped by age, with classes overseen by one teacher each for the duration of the school year.

Because of our open-classroom plan, children can mix frequently with the other classes, but they do the majority of their small group work with their individual class and often develop their closest relationships there.
This transitional kindergarten class serves children ages 4.6-5.5 (in September) and features a small class size, a great student-teacher ratio, and a dedicated classroom space. Classes are limited to 15-18 students with two fully certified teachers. The program runs from 8:30am-1:30pm, Monday through Friday.

Report
Calvary Nursery School has been an excellent preschool for our children. Our daughter was there for two years and was extremely well prepared for kindergarten. The director, Deb, and her teachers do such a great job of integrating learning with play and the entire community from the parents association and teachers to volunteers and friends (music, art), etc. make such a wonderful experience for the kids--and the parents. Needless to say, our son is there now and loves it! We couldn't be happier with our decision to enroll at Calvary.
