Seattle's Progressive Preschool is a cooperative preschool emphasizing diversity, environmental learning, and social awareness. To provide a quality preschool community experience for families with children ages 1-5, emphasizing social and environmental justice as a building block for change. To create a strong network of families who champion a fair, just, and sustainable world and who inspire the communities around them.
Children of a very young age have an inherent sense of what is fair and what is not. SPP's curriculum is focused on instilling in our kids the understanding that they are capable of making a difference in the world. In time, such awareness enables action, which enables justice. We are committed to making the coop work for all interested families.

Seattle's Progressive Preschool is a cooperative preschool emphasizing diversity, environmental learning, and social awareness. Our goal is to prepare children for educational success, while guiding them to become thoughtful, proactive adults who believe that they can make the world a fairer and greener home for everyone.
Though there are existing schools that are based around particular themes or causes, Derek and Cynthia wanted to create a school that embraced the full spectrum of social and environmental issues that fall under the progressive umbrella. From our choice of toys, to our service activities and our location on bus lines, we strive to make every decision consistent with good environmental stewardship and social justice.
Seattle's Progressive Preschool embraces a play-based curriculum. Preschool children learn many social skills, such as sharing, taking turns, and conflict resolution, through play. These skills are critical to their educational success: Children who master these skills before kindergarten entry are able to focus on the increasingly academic nature of the early elementary school curriculum.
Teacher Jennifer has been working and caring for children aged birth to 17 for the last 20 years, in a wide variety of settings. Her teaching style centers around a child led classroom. She loves the coop model of teaching and learning as it provides an ideal environment for children to lead and explore with adults as their assistants, and guides when needed.
Co-op families work in the classroom as assistant teachers, enabling them to get to know fellow SPP family members and their child's classmates. Through this sharing, many coop families develop bonds that last for decades, providing support and friendship beyond the preschool years.
Those working in the classroom can be parents, grandparents, au pairs/nannies or other trusted family members that have been through our assistant teaching training and orientation, signing and meeting all the required documentation.Parents attend monthly meetings where they learn skills and help build the co-op community.

My three children attended the school for a few days. I felt discriminated against as a woman of color. I was given a position in the coop without any conversation or consideration of my skills, and then was told it wasn't a board position when the description said it was. I was also told I would have to spend more time in the classroom because I had the most kids which was not mentioned when I was enrolling my children. The class size didn't lend itself to learning social skills and it showed in the students. When I asked for a prorated reimbursement after paying about $1600 for about 3-4 days

Seattle's Progressive Preschool is a fantastic community of parents who care about social and environmental justice and are committed to creating a vibrant intentional community for their children. We absolutely love the parent education component provided by Seattle Community Colleges, in which we benefit from the deep knowledge of an expert in child development and parenting who teaches us about emotion coaching, positive discipline and other parenting topics.

We love SPP! Our son has been so nurtured here, and the community is wonderful. The missions of social justice and environmentalism run through the curriculum and the school's decisions. Parent education sessions are so helpful, we have had discussions about emotion coaching, how to talk about race, and more. As parents we are learning from the school right along with our children. Highly recommended!!

My kiddo is thriving in this kid friendly environment and loves the balance of structure and free-play. The teachers and parent educators are informed, compassionate, and enjoyable people who nurture the children and caregivers. We enjoy the community and opportunity to connect with other families in this coop experience.

My daughter has been going to this school for the past two years. It is a great school if you are looking for the co-op experience. I almost see it more as a family enrichment / education program than a preschool. Another thing I love about the school, and in part why we start preschool on the early side, is to meet other parents. We have come a way with several people who I consider friends and hang out with outside school and that means a lot to me. We have worked with both teachers (there are two classes taught by two separate teachers). They are both great! the older-kids-class teacher was
