Thank goodness SF has reopened and Allen's studio is open again! Allen's been my only hair magician ever since I moved up to the Bay Area, and I have to drive an hour each way! I love how Allen layers my hair. I find his layering to be modern and exquisite -- feels like art on my head! And no shortcuts like some other stylists, just him and a pair of scissors. As long as I'm in the SF area and he's still giving haircuts, he's my go-to stylist!

I thought I'd wait a few months to write a review for Allen Fu since I had a sticker shock at the time I had a trim& color touch up with him back in October 2019. We were in town for work and I needed a freshen up and heard that he's great so I called for a same day appointment, which they were able to accommodate me with the Eponymous stylist. The salon is located on the 3rd floor of typical SF building which requires you to climb up the spiral stairs (beware if you are a fall risk). I was greeted with a warm welcome, offered drink, coat checked, etc. the space is clean and there

I got my hair colored and cut with straight bangs and subtle layers.
The hair color came out great! With medium-thick black Asian hair, I went from black to a dark wine red. No bleach per my request. It was about an hour and a half (I think). The whole process was pleasant and I could feel during and after that high quality products were used. :)
For my straight bangs and layered hair, it looked and felt like Allen cut every single strand individually. He was incredibly detailed. He made my bangs perfect, making them straight but also shaping them to my face. I really appreciated that he knew

Maybe I expected too much, maybe b/c there so many Asians in the Bay and I didn't think I could be led astray... but I was severely disappointed. I asked for not too many layers, what did I get? Layers. I asked for a shorter cut in the back.... it's already growing out and it's only been 1.5 weeks. I asked for low maintenance, but apparently I'm supposed to use product.
And rather than scissors he used an electric razor for most of the haircut.
One of the pricier haircuts I've had and severely disappointed.

Everyone spends their lives looking for just the right fit. Someone who gets what makes you look good, someone who doesn't mind if you're feeling talkative at one appointment or just want to sleep while getting your hair done up at another, someone who is just all around a great guy. Having lived in Boston and New York, I never found that match, but in San Francisco, I did.
Allen is simply the best and treats you like family. If you need

I hate getting haircuts. I have long and straight Asian hair that has never been dyed, permed, etc. and does not need much care in general. I've had my hair trimmed in the exact same way by the exact same person from a salon in my hometown for the past 9 years. I've never been overjoyed, but I did not want to risk a disastrous hairstyle so I never looked elsewhere.

I don't review many businesses but I need you to know about Allen's hair studio. When you sit in Allen's chair and he works, time stops and you witness mastery of craft. It's like the violin music of chef's table is playing in the background, and he's the 3-Star Michelin hair dresser.
He has cut, colored (highlighted and balayage), and bang trimmed my hair. Having a slay cut and color gives me confidence every day.
I only go to Allen. It's worth every penny.

I came into the studio a bit skeptical at the fact that this place has so many five star reviews on Yelp, but also because I never really fully love my haircuts. But I can honestly say that I walked out of my appointment so impressed and so pleased!!

I've been meaning to get another haircut, but for the past few months I've just been traveling. Well, when I finally looked at my pictures from my travels I realized that I've let my hair grow to the point where it had no shape and it failed to define my face. I made another appointment with Allen. I went in and told him about my dilemma. I wanted short hair, but if my hair was too short then one side would flair out and one side would stay straight. I have never in my life walked out of a salon completely loving my haircut...UNTIL TODAY!!
I went to see Allen after purchasing a Gilt City voucher and I am SO thankful I cashed in on it before it expired! Allen was super friendly and did a great job describing what he intended on doing with my locks.
I'm usually a one haircut per year kind of girl, but with this new haircut..I am definitely more motivated to keep it maintained. He gave me more natural layers on the ends of my hair and it has some seriously great movement. The last time I got my hair cut, the lady hacked off all my layers

Allen Fu is an amazing and truly talented artist! I went from rags to riches with my new haircut from Allen. The space is in a great location in Chinatown, gorgeous lighting and design. I purchased a Gilt City voucher and came to Allen to breathe some new life into my boring, standard hairstyle. He gave me a robe to put over my clothes - a nice touch so that I didn't risk getting any pesky stray hairs on my clothing, and first started by washing my hair, which is my favorite part of getting my hair cut. I love the head massage which a lot of salons do a half-hearted job during this part but Allen gave a fantastic and vigorous one. They use R+Co products that smell really great and are packaged beautifully.

I followed my hairstylist, Glenn here, and while I'll go wherever he goes, the salon has a wonderful, airy, and inviting atmosphere. It's in a great older building on the corner with floor to ceiling windows and fantastic light. There's a wonderful mixture of modern and vintage 70s styling that make it a comfortable place to relax.

The best. I've been going to Nikolai for over a year -- I followed him on his move over from Patrick Evans'. Not only is Nikolai fun to hangout with during the cut, he treats you royally throughout and makes sure each trim is accurate to a t; he treats your hair like a fine art project. With his accuracy comes time though, so you must be willing to schedule a longer than average appointment. I highly recommend his keratin treatments, his blowouts and his cuts/trims!
