The Family Academy is a non-profit service organization dedicated to helping the families of Utah County. In particular, we help reduce the damaging effects of divorce, parental loss and other domestic trauma on children. Many families come to the Family Academy after being referred by domestic and juvenile court officials, attorneys, physicians, mental health professionals and clergy.
Services
Prior to 1960 approximately one in nine children saw their parents divorce. In the 1990's experts predict that nearly 50% of children will see their parents disunited. Clearly, no other social, physical, or psychological adversity affects the number of children as does the experience of parental divorce.
The experience of single parenthood can challenge the available parental resources necessary for children. The Family Academy will develop programs aimed at increasing the available energy and resources to children in single parent households. Single parent education. Specific parent-child education training aimed a the special needs associated with being a single parent.
The purpose of this class project is to work jointly with The Family Academy, a non-profit organization in Utah County, to create a weekly, two hour, informational seminar that will run for six weeks. Two additional workshop weeks of the series will be dedicated to instructing participants on implementing the subjects discussed during the previous seminar nights in order to create a parenting plan.
From a child's perspective, the end of their parents' marriage means the end of their world as they know it. Children are highly dependent on their parents, and to lose one is experienced as a terrible loss. They know that a parent is irreplaceable. A primary reaction to your divorce is anger: how could you!
Going through divorce can be a difficult process for all parties involved. However, when children are involved, divorce can become that much more complicated; rather than parting ways, both parents must still work together for the benefit of their children. Navigating this new family dynamic can be one of the trickiest aspects of divorce, and many divorcing parents may question whether or not it is possible.
