The concept for DeChi Designs Jewelry began and took shape when I, the "craft lady", served as Christian Education Director and Minister to Youth & Young Adults at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Wash., DC under the pastoral leadership of the Rev. Dr. Lois A. Poag-Ray. We planned a Community Day event and wanted to provide activities for the children in attendance that would make them as "beautiful" on the outside as they were on the inside.
So, Sis. C. Johnson, jewelry designer and member, taught me some simple techniques that I could use to show the children how to make jewelry that they could wear and keep. The rest is history, as they say. I was hooked and had found another outlet for my creative impulses. I began making pieces and giving them to family and friends, who then bragged to their friends and insisted that I sell my beautiful pieces.
