According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), three million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries each year. One of the critical risk factors that contribute to these injuries, especially in older adults with underlying comorbidities such as cerebrovascular disease, is a condition known as foot drop, which is an inability to raise the foot during activities of daily life such as walking.

This causes the toes to drag on the ground, which significantly increases the chances of falling. Not surprisingly, nearly 70% of stroke survivors suffer falls-related fractures in the first year alone. For years, the only solution to mitigate foot drop were rigid leg braces with shoe inserts, called ankle-foot orthotics, combined with intense physical therapy.

The NextStep Robotics team has used their years of experience in using novel robotic solutions in the field of neuro-rehabilitation to create a game-changing robotic ankle training device to rehabilitate patients that have foot drop because of stroke and other disease conditions. Until now, conventional care for injuries resulting from foot drop were intensive physical therapy, and thereafter, uncomfortable orthotics or assistive devices.
The NextStep Robotics team has used their knowledge of robotics and engineering to pioneer a digital breakthrough in the treatment of foot drop and other causes of decreased mobility. Our experienced staff's creative solution to the rehabilitation of foot drop has changed how orthopedic specialists will treat this condition.
Foot drop is a mobility disability resulting from an underlying neurological or muscular injury that affects millions of people nationwide each year. People who have foot drop cannot lift the front of their feet due to weakness or paralysis of the muscles in the feet. This mobility disability can affect one or both feet and can be temporary or even permanent.
Foot drop, a condition that causes difficulty lifting the front part of the foot, affects millions of people every year. A large majority of foot drop patients are people who have had a stroke or those who are over the age of sixty-five. Patients who have foot drop cannot properly control the muscles of the foot, which may cause the toes to drag on the ground when walking.
NextStep Robotics has developed a groundbreaking device that combines robotic therapy and physical therapy. Our product allows for increased mobility for patients who suffer from a number of conditions. So, what exactly is our product, and how can it be used to benefit patients? NextStep Robotics's device is designed to strengthen foot muscles by analyzing the toe angle for each step and then making corrective adjustments for subsequent steps.
