St Mark Preschool
Finding quality care for your child is never an easy task. Parents should look for a center that meets both their needs (schedule, location) and the needs of their child. St. Mark Lutheran Preschool strives to be "Loving care you can count on!" Respecting the faith of all families is a core value of our program.

We purposefully include stories, music and celebrations from the faiths of all of the children in our school. The turning of the year always seems to be a good time for reflection and goal setting. As we look back on 2014, we can see several milestones that were met and celebrated in the preschool and we look forward to meeting new goals in the year to come.
Services
For fifty years, Charlottesville parents have trusted St. Mark Preschool to provide quality child care and early education, for children ages 2 1/2 - kindergarten. St. Mark Preschool originally opened it's doors in the late 1950's as St. Mark's Kindergarten and Nursery School. In 1974, the congregation changed the name to St. Mark Preschool.
For fifty years, the curriculum at St. Mark Preschool has been centered on the guiding principle that children learn through play. Our developmentally appropriate program incorporates "best practices" from well-known early childhood curricular approaches, such as Reggio, Montessori and Waldkindergarten.

My daughter and I looked at about 10 day care centers in Charlottesville last summer (2017) to find a good fit for my grandson (age 3 at the time). This, as we were seeing some issues that made us uncomfortable at the Montessori school my grandson was attending (no leader/director on site at that school). When we had seen about seven schools we then visited St Mark Lutheran Preschool. We immediately knew my grandson had to be there as they had everything we were looking for: incredible safety stops in place- secured doors and vigilant teachers. They also teach a Christian foundation and provide

Our 3 children have attended St. Mark Lutheran Preschool, and we have always been impressed with the individual attention to the different needs and personalities of each child. We were drawn to the program by the amount of outdoor play, teacher qualifications, engagement, and superior level of communication with parents. The Director or Assistant Director greets you upon arrival and pickup and provides feedback about your child's day. Our kids love their teachers, and our first grader can't wait to visit St. Mark to catch up with her past teachers. The school is dedicated to safety, active communication

Our oldest daughter has been at St Mark Lutheran Preschool for over 2 years. I can’t say enough about how loving the teachers are. They have a resource teacher who helps develop curriculum based on the class interests which is not something you find at many preschools. I am a pediatrician and see children from lots of different schools, and would not hesitate to recommend SMLP.

Having been through 3 different daycares in C'ville before my son even turned 8-month-old, we've been so happy to have found St. Mark and not having to change school anymore. We've been with St. Mark as soon as my son was old enough to enroll, and it's been three years now. It's a wonderfully warm and lovely place to be for our little one. The school setting is so cozy that my son is familiar with all the teachers and all the classrooms, which makes the transition at the turn of each school year super easy. My son still thinks fondly and lovingly for all his teachers.
We enjoy seeing and helping

I am a mom of 4 and have had my kids in various daycares and preschools around Charlottesville. I can say with all honesty that this preschool tops all the others. Is it perfect? no. Early on we had an issue with our child, but we were contacted by the director and discussed the situation immediately. She worked with us to resolve the issue and followed up with us on several occasions. From our perspective, the school goes above and beyond what we would expect from a preschool in terms of professionalism and communication. The director has the patience of a saint. I have seen her in action and

We have had our 2 children at St Marks Preschool over the last 3 years and have been thrilled with our experience.
This sweet play-based school has talented teachers who know how to set up enriching play experiences (inside and outside) with their peers and let the magic happen, only intervening when absolutely necessary. These kids are developing all sorts of important skills that can’t be tested on a standardized assessment like problem solving, team work, negotiating, creativity and imagination, empathy among others. Their approach helps each child build a strong foundation in emotional intelligence

Beware of this school. They do have some really great teachers and the facility and playground is nice. I know many people have had positive experiences, but I also know a handful with truly horrible experiences. They have expelled a number of boys in the past year, at least two of them for seemingly age appropriate situations. Think about your small child being expelled and distanced from the teachers and friends they truly love, with no warning or lead time to find another school. It is hard not only on the family (especially if you have a job!) but most importantly the child. I suspect that
